Cavitt/Cavett/...Cuz'ns
I am a Cavitt descendant and member of the mail list who has enjoyed
your postings for months - without contribution - because I had nothing
to contribute. Now it is my turn.
Several days ago Rita posted a description of the Cavett massacre in
1793. Those of you who saw this will remember that ALEXANDER CAVETT and
his entire family was brutally massacred at Cavett Station near
Knoxville, TN, and that this massacre was credited with saving Knoxville
from a raid by some 1000 Indian warriors.
I learned from a cousin that there was an historical monument concerning
the massacre in the Knoxville area. Knoxvillians are generally unaware
of this, but on Wednesday, August 20th, I finally found it!
There are two momuments in Knoxville: one at 430 Broome Road, the other
on Kingston Pike in front of Rodger's Cadillac. I photographed both.
Alexander was well known and respected in the establishment of our
country, and I will share new information with the Mail List as I
go through my notes.
MONUMENT TO THE MASSACRE: To my delight, I found that the monument at
430 Broome Rd is on property owned by a Cavitt Descendant, BARRY CAIN,
who was most gracious in telling me what he knew of the event.
The Monument was placed by the Sons of the American Revolution, and
the inscription reads as follows:
"Upon this spot stood the house of Alexander Cavett who was
murdered ogether with two men and the Cavett Family of twelve
September 25th, 1793 after heroic resistance against a combined
Creek and Cherokee force numbering one thousand warriors thereby
insuring failure of the intended attack upon the town of Knoxville.
Erected by the Tennessee Society Sons of the Revolution September 25,
1921.

Cavett's Station
About 1/2 mile north was this early fortified settlement.
Here, on September 25, 1793, Alexander Cavett and 12 other
settlers were massacred by a Cherokee war party under Doublehead, one
of the more savage chiefs of the tribe.
