This old home was built in 1835 by a Mr. Charleton from Boston, who had
come to Texas on an inspection tour. He liked the country and decided to
stay. our grandmother, Mrs. Ann Cavitt, employed him to build this
hotel.
Wheelock was a "stopping place" for the stage which ran between Houston
and San Antonio, and this was a place to get food and change horses.
In this way travelers and the news were brought from other parts of the
country. Many people from the older states came to inspect this new
country. Sam Houston came by stage to and from San Antonio - in those
early days, the town of Houston was 100 miles away and was headquarters
for their many necessaries - and the stage coach was a great convenience
to everybody. In this group of people who came with the "Sterling
Robertson Colony" from Tennessee to Texas in 1835, were teachers,
doctors, ministers, carpenters and etc., all interested in the new
country and free land given to them in "Falls County. (1 league). The
Indians were not friendly, so grandfather, moved his family down to
Washington County for the summer and died near Milican. The Millican
family were the first white settlers in this part of Texas.
