Hello Cavitts Everywhere! Greetings from hot and humid Southeast
Kansas!!!!!
This is my first original post to the list (hope I'm doing this right!). I
wanted to comment on the reliability of the Cavitt Book that Rita has been
posting. I'm a novice genealogist researching the African-American Cavitts.
My husband is decendant of slaves belonging to the Andrew Cavitt family in
Robertson County Texas. Anyway - when Rita first began the posting of the
book, she made it very clear that there were problems with some of the info
contained in the book. In spite of that, we have put the book to very good
use. We have used it as a springboard for our research. For instance, the
book's list of slaves and other references to slaves led us to search and
compare slave schedules that helped us CONFIRM that my husband's family took
the Cavitt name upon being set free. The book Rita has shared with us has
brought us to many tearful moments around the kitchen table - especially when
my husband saw the names and descriptions of the Cavitt slaves for the first
time and it became apparent to us that they were OUR FAMILY - our little son's
ggggggrandparents, aunties, and uncles!!!
The point of all this is that no one source can be definitive - any source is
simply PART of the puzzle and nothing more - and all sources are suspect
without other corroborating evidence. We never counted on learning so much
about the white Cavitts - but we couldn't have learned about the black Cavitts
any other way.
You all are wonderful - we look forward to learning more and maybe meeting
someday!!!!
