chose not to burden them with a sick old man's troubles.
One quiet morning Bill walked up to the top of the mountain, above the
edge of the pretty lake. He carried with him a package about eighteen
inches long and as big around as a pair of rolled-up pants might make.
Only the store from which he bought his supplies knew that on this
morning Bill had purchased three sticks of dynamite ... not an unusual
purchase for the explosive expert of the community.
At the top of the hill Bill rested, the pain terribly keen and biting
again. Determinedly he prepared the explosives, took his diamond in his
hand, gave one last look to this rare and beloved object of beauty, lit
the fuse ... a very short one ... and lay down over the three sticks of
dynamite. The explosion was heard throughout Santa Anna. The
townspeople who investigated the noise on top of their mountain reported
to the community that not one iota of the man nor the diamond remained
that could identify either.
For years the community wondered over the tragedy and some wag asked if
Santa Anna residents feared they were getting diamond dust in their
drinking water from the lake.
Bill, with the will and courage to live as you chose, please feel
included in the big family of the Clan Cavitt.
