During the 1850's when Gen. Robert E. Lee was serving in Texas he wrote
in a prophetic vein., "I am listening to the footsteps of the coming
millions." Texas has attained over six of these millions: both Texans
(those who were born in the great state) and Texans (those who adopted
the state for sheer love of its magnificence). Some years ago Gene Howe
wrote., "There is no Texan like a Texan born some place else." For those
of us who adopted the state., who were adopted into the Clan Cavitt
there is possibly a stronger pull of loyalty than for those who got both
degrees by the mere accident of birth. We got our status the hard way,
through competition and determination, and we old tenaciously to both
loves.
Without public fanfare or acclaim the Cavitts continued upon the path
hewn by their pioneer ancestors empowered by that double dose of
determination acquired from being twice a Cavett-Cavitt,, rearing their
children to serve their community, their day and age in whatever
capacity seemed most fitting. Their stressed dictum was always to take
no verbal commitments, ask but don't answer questions, mind your own
business., help others without interfering or becoming entangled, serve
God and your country.
Micah's reminder,, "What doth God require of thee but to do justly and
to love mercy and walk humbly with thy God" might fittingly be the
chosen scripture to accompany the Cavitt motto in their coat of arms: HE
CONQUERS WHO CONQUERS SELF.
