Communication from Mrs. Edwards:
I wish to give your book to the John Allen Walker Library of Howard
Payne College. There is a treasure.room named for my mother in which
books and records can be consulted, but not taken from the fire-proof
building.
I am sending you a brochure descriptive of this library.
The brochure states:
The active interest of John A. Walker in Howard Payne College began in
1895 when he became a citizen of Brownwood. Between the years 1900 and
1920 he gave an annual stipend to Howard Payne College for current
expenses,
In 1921 his donation to the endowment fund of $30 000 was the first
large gift for such purpose. His interest in the school grew with the
years. In 1927 he added $70,000 to the endowment, In 1934 he further
augmented his previous gifts with $6o.,ooo. In 1937, sensing that his
years were few, he set up the Walker Trust Fund of more than a million
dollars through which., upon his death in 1942, the future of Howard
Pavne College became a surety and a reality.
In grateful appreciation of the interest of Mr. Walker in higher
education under active and evangelical Christian influence, the Board of
Trustees have designated the library of the institution The John Allen
Walker Library.
At the head of the stairs is the Mary Elizabeth Peacock Walker Treasure
room housing rare books and items of interest to alumni and friends. It
has genealogical books and records. Mrs. Edwards gave all her mothers
genealogical books, magazines and first censuses to this Library. The
local chapter of the D.A.R. is building up a genealogical library there
by buying new books in memory of her mother, who was Local Chapter
Regent, State Registar, States Vice Regent when she died in 1936.
