A CAVETT FAMILY
One of the largest Cavitt-Cavett families (eleven children) other than
those of Volney and Josephus Cavitt, was the D. F. and Ann Owens Cavett
family of Coryell County., Texas.
To connect the Andrew Cavitts and this family the quick generation
tote-up is:
I. MOSES (Lst) CAVET
II. MOSES (2nd) CAVET
III. RICHARD and RUTHA MILISAP CAVETT
IV. THOMAS and BETSY McADORY CAVETT
V. JAMES RICHARD and LOUISA CONNOR CAVETT
VI. D. F. and ANNE OWENS CAVETT
In generation IV, Thomas Cavitt, born 10-19-1792 was the ninth child of
the twelve children of Richard and Rutha Millsap Cavett of Madison
County., Alabama, and the brother of Ann Cavett, who married Andrew
Cavitt.
Thomas married in Alabama and came to Texas. We have record of only two
sons of Thomas and Betsy McAdory Cavett who grew to manhood; James
Richard Cavett and R. A. Cavett who married Mildred Anderson.
The eleven children of James Richard and Anne Owens Cavett are:
1. William Robert, called Bob, who married a young woman twenty-two
years his junior.,
Madie White. He was a prosperous Coryell County, Texas farmer,.rancher,
storekeeper and banker at Oglesby., Texas. After his death, Mrs. W. R.
Cavett moved to Waco.
· They had no children.
2. Miss Laura Cavett, a life-long Presbyterian, never married. She
taught school 43 years at Leon Junction and Turnersville, where she was
principal of a six teacher school. After her retirement, she lived with
a sister, Sally Cavett Schleigh at Gatesville., Texas. Both had died
before I was able to learn of their whereabouts and get information from
a "cousin Sally" about the family - back in 1930 - in one of the dozens
of interesting letters in the now apocryphal collection of John
Belvedere Brooks Cavitt and Josephus Franklin Cavitt. I use apocryphal
not meaning doubtful of authenticity, but difficult for me to identify
after 30 to 40 years interim before the cache came to light, during
which time the correspondents had died.
3. Joe A. Cav6tt who married, had no children.
4. Sallie Cavett Schleigh, Gatesville, Texas, no children.
5. Bruce Cavett married Celia Avery, one adoptive son, W. Richard Cavett
of Austin, Texas. He has two daughters, Ann and Sarah Cavett.
