where by prearranged plans, all except their Captain fell to the ground
in the high weeds. Their gallant Captain alone reached the battle front.
He was so confident his brave soldiers were supporting him that he began
at once to whack the bees, but they came out in such force they proved
too many for a lone Captain.
The boys afterwards in great humility expressed their shame and regrets
that their hearts had failed them at the last moment. They all expressed
to their valiant Captain their gratification at having one boy in school
who had the grit to attack a nest of yellow-bodied bumble-bees
singlehanded. The swollen head of Dave Wheelock was not so from pride.

Kittie Dunn Cavitt said while she attended school in the log school
house on one occasion, a pupil sitting just back of a redheaded boy
amused the other school children by sticking his finger near the boy's
red hair, then putting his finger on his knee and hammering with his
fist like a blacksmith while the iron was red-hot. The amused
expressions on the other pupils' faces caused the suspicions of the
red-headed boy to be aroused. He turned his head suddenly and caught the
fun-maker redhanded and at once jumped and pummeled him vigorously. The
offense was too great for the chastisement to be postponed until recess.
