Request to Roll Call:
Hi, I'm researching Lorent/Laurent Cavit who was listed in the 1790 Ouachita
Post, Louisiana Census. His children were: Lorent, Jr., Joseph, Pierre, Mary
or Marie, Monea or Manot, and Mary Ann. Other possible children are: Julia,
Louisa, and Madaline.
My line is Mary Ann who married Joseph Wheeler Sept 21, 1813 in Ouachita
Parish, Louisiana. They left the area and went to Ashley County, Ark by 1826.
Then to Union County, Arkansas in 1830 & 1840. By 1850 They were in Bradley
County, Arkansas. There children were Madeline, James, William, Joseph, Jr.,
Elizabeth, Nancy and Hester.
In 1790 the Ouachita Post was a very unsettled area. There were only 242
individuals listed. Very little is known about the early history of Ouachita
Post, often called Fort Miro during the Spanish period. It was the center of
population for the greater northeast Louisiana area and a way-station between
the settlements further south, particularly Pointe Coupee and New Orleans, and
the upper Mississippi Valley posts-Arkansas and the beyond.
The Cavit children married into the Prudhomme, Raypon, Diboto, Pomet, Racine,
Wheeler, Kipler, Duval, Carkuff, and Pirkey families.
Why were the Cavits in this area? Where did they come from? Laurent Cavet,
Sr. died there in March 1812. Would like to hear from other Cavit researchers
on this matter.
Thanks,
Terry Gill
