After writing to several of the Colleges in which Cavitt's children had
been educated, we found one response interesting enough to be copied in
its entirety:
WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
Lexington, Virginia
Frank A. Parsons
Assistant to the President
Mrs. Sheridan Duncan Cavitt
3000 Austin Avenue Waco, Texas
Dear Mrs. Cavitt:
May 7, 1965
I find in our school records the names of three former students with the
name Cavitt. I found none who spelled their name with an "E".
They are Belvedere Brooks Cavitt, Josephus Franklin Cavitt, and William
Sparks Cavitt, all of whom entered Washington and Lee in 1885 and all of
whom listed their parent or guardian as Volney Cavitt. Their entering
ages were B.B., 21; J. F., 17; and W. S., 19; and all listed their home
address as Wheelock, Texas.
I can give you some more information about them. B. B. was here for one
school year and studied Modern Language, English and Mathematics. He
later became a fruit grower in Keyser, W. Va., and died in 1932.
J. F. was here, or at least was registered, for two school years, In
1885-86, he studied Latin, Greek, English, and Mathematics. The
following year, he studied Modern Language, Mathematics, and Chemistry.
He was born Nov. 17, 1867 in Wheelock, Texas, and died June 11, 1952, in
Valley Mills, Texas. He married Mollie Caufield May 16, 1896 and they
had one son, Volney. He was a farmer, ranchman, and oil transporter in
McGregor, Texas; was a Mason, a Democrat, and a Presbyterian.
W. S. studied, in 1885-86, Latin, Greek, English, and Mathematics; and
the next year, Greek, Modern Language, Belles Lettres, and Mathematics.
He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. I might add, that there is on
file in our Alumni Office a very handsome and beautifully preserved
photograph of him made-by M. Miley, a well known Lexington photographer
of that day whose photographs are now considered valuable.
Sincerely,
Frank A. Parsons
Assistant to the President
The old album from the attic holds two Miley Photographs so alike we are
unable to decide which is Joe and which is Will. The larger photograph,
definitely of the very handsome, Will, shows him wearing his Sigma Nu
Fraternity pin. The children of J. H. Sturgis (deceased) related that
their father, Will's closest friend, was also of the Washington and Lee
chapter of Sigma Nu.
