Cavitt Station was on some 200 acres, part of which was located along today's Mars
Hill Road in West Knoxville. After the massacre, Moses Cavitt inherited the land, and as
recently as five years ago, it was occupied by descendant of Moses Cavitt's daughter
who married a Lonas.
From Kingston Pike in West Knoxville (which parallels, and is a short block South of
I-40 Eastbound):
- Exit I-40 at Walker Springs Rd
- Follow Walker Springs Road to a sharp curve to the
left; at this point, Mars Hill Road branches off to the right.
- Follow the long hill up Mars Hill Road to its crest.
- The older home on the right is the site of the massacre. The owner is a
descendant of Moses Cavitt.
Monuments to the Massacre
(1) Sons of the American Revolution Momument placed at the site on Mars Hill Road. This
is private property, so
knock on the door, ask permission, and meet a Cavitt relative.
(2) Historic Marker at 8360 Kingston Pike in Knoxville, in front of Rodgers Cadillac.
I have photographs of the monuments that I will be happy to share - as soon as I refind
them.
