He probably descends from Philippe Gavit, original immigrant to New
England, who was born on the Isle of Jersey 2 May, 1631, came to Salem,
Mass in 1647 and married c1655, per the family Bible of Joseph Gavitt who
was born in Salem 22 December, 1699. The origin of the name is French
and place of origin Artois, Britany. Gavet, Cavet, Cavit, Gavette,
Gavitt, Cavitt, Cavett. Many lived in England, Ireland, Scotland and the
Channel Islands. Over time, the G became a C in both Britain and the US.
