Thank you so very much, Howard.
I have portions of "the" Cavitt book, but nothing on
military service this early, though I was aware that
Alexander Cavitt had served (I assume in the Continental
Army) during the Revolutionary War. As I recall, he
quite distinguished himself.
As far as I know, other than the descendants of Moses Cavitt, there is only
one other Cavitt line in America.
Is this correct, Listers???
My Cavitt line is via Richard's daughter Mary Cavitt who
married William Lapsley Armstrong.

Subject: Re: [CAVITT] Happy Birthday, USA
I have not run across anything concerning Richard Cavett's
military
service,
or lack thereof. I do know that his son, Joseph Cavett, was commissioned
as a
Lieutenant in the Sumner County (TN) Militia on 12/7/1798. I also have
located records that indicate that Richard's sons served as follows in the
War of
1812 as Privates:
Andrew Cavett enlisted in Captain John Weakley's Company of Colonel John
Cocke's Infantry Regiment on 11/13/1813.
Moses Cavett enlisted in Captain Stephen Griffith's Company of Colonel
William Higgins' Regiment of Mounted Riflemen on 12/20/1813.
Joseph Cavett enlisted in Captain John Strothers' Company of Colonel
Phillip
Pipkin's Regiment of Militia Infantry on 6/20/1814.
Andrew Cavett (re)enlisted in Captain John Weakley's Company of Colonel
John
Cocke's Infantry Regiment on 11/19/1814.
Richard's brother Michael Whitley Cavett had two sons that served in the
War
of 1812 as Privates:
Thomas Cavett enlisted in Captain Stephen Griffith's Company of Colonel
William Higgins' Regiment of Mounted Riflemen on 12/20/1813.
George Cavett enlisted in Captain Robert Campbell's Company of Colonel
Robert
Steele's Regiment of Militia Infantry on 1/28/1814.
The only other information that I have about Cavett's military service
relates to Moses Cavett's son, Richard Cavett, and his extensive service
in the
Sullivan County Militia principally on expeditions against the Indians.
I suppose that you are aware that Moses Cavett and Alexander Cavett served
a
two month active duty hitch in Captain David Looney's Company of the
Fincastle
County (VA) Militia on the "Frontier of Fincastle", which at that time
stretched all the way to the Mississippi River. Moses entered that
service on
8/7/1776 and mustered out on 10/12/1776. Alexander entered that service
on
8/10/1776, served for a time as a spy, and mustered out on 10/12/1776. By
1777, they
were both back in what eventually became Sullivan County, TN.
