I just recently started researching my mother's family. My family are
African-American Cavitts/Cavetts. The confusing and interesting part of my
search is that my maternal grandfather was named Edward Houston Cavitt born
in 1874 in Tennessee; my maternal grandmother was named Beatrice Cavett born
in 1887 or 88 in Dukedom, TN. They moved to Fulton, KY in the early 1900's
and later settled in Carbondale, Illinois. My mother told me her father
used to say they were Palmers before they were Cavitts. I saw an inquiry
regarding the marriage of a William Alexander Cavitt to Elizabeth Palmer of
Palmersville, TN. I'm thinking maybe his mother or grandmother were slaves
of the Palmers and moved with Elizabeth and took W.A. Cavitt's name. I'm
still at a loss about my grandmother's family. Some of her brothers went in
Cavitt, but she didn't. Her father's name was William and her mother's name
was Mary, full blooded or half Indian. My grandmother had a sister Jenny
and brothers Rob, Sonny, John Edgar and Finas. They also had Caucasian
relatives in Fulton, KY. If anyone has any information to add to this,
please let me know. Thanks.
