Randy,
We forgive your spelling. I'm sure it's only a matter of
time until I post a misspelled word, and after all, verbatim is so
frequently misspelled. (By the way, when I first wrote the line above, I
made the same mistake as you.)

Listers all,
My apologies for "disappearing without a trace"; my computer crashed, and it just spent three days in a computer shop, but I have it back...."better than ever".
Helen
Randy,
You've solved a big mystery for me; I always wondered
what happened to the land in Knox County.

Randy: Thank you very much for posting the Michael Cavitt Will. It
provides me with information which may be the key to solving a mystery I
tried to unravel several years ago. I had not known that Michael's death
followed by less than a year his indictment for possessing and attempting
to conceal ".......a certain mould, stamp, die, punch and other machines
and instruments designed, intended, and calculated for the forging and
counterfeiting of Spanish milled dollars....." That would explain why I
was not able to find any record of a trial. Michael, his wife, daughters
Molly and Betsy and son Alexander were caught January 13, 1819 in
possession of the equipment and in the act of deciding where best to hide
it. From the outset they claimed it was the property of Andrew Cavitt,
Michael's young nephew. Andrew, along with Michael, was also indicted by
a grand jury in March, 1819. Again, I could find no record of a trial.
Indeed, in early 1820, Andrew went down to Madison County, Alabama, and
married second cousin Ann Cavitt. In 1821 they moved to unorganized
western Tennessee territory, bought considerable land and raised several
sons. They obviously prospered mightily because when they set out for
Texas only seven years later and bought huge tracts of land, their
entourage included 20 slaves. It has always been my conviction that
"making money" had much to do with Andrew's remarkable economic progress.
And he got away with it. Thanks again. Jack Bryan

Hi Helen - I'll join the list, but in the past very few people from my early
Pennsylvania branches were list members.
I would be interested in seeing your account of the massacre and photos.

I just wanted to test the waters and see if anyone on this list has any
CAVITT ancestors who hail from Ireland. My CAVITT ancestor was Margaret CAVITT,
who married Edward BLAKE. They lived in Navan, County Meath, Ireland and had
at least three children:
1. Mary BLAKE - (b. 15 Sept 1837, d. 29 Nov 1935 in Hastings-on Hudson, NY
- Westchester County); immigrated to NY in 1870; married John SPOHN in
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY abt. 1898
2. Edward BLAKE - (b. Jan, 1841); immigrated to Yonkers, NY (Westchester
County) in 1869
3. Thomas BLAKE - (b. abt. 1843, d. 1914 in Ramapo, NY - Rockland County);
had three wives: 1)unknown 2) Mary MCDONNELL (b. 1858 in Ireland, d. 18 Mar
1896 in Irvington, NY - Westchester County) and 3) Rose ?
If any of these individuals rings a bell, please contact me! Thanks!

Helen,
Thanks for taking on the list. I have just acquired copies of the will of
Michael Cavett and 2 indentures of Michael and Richard Cavett. One of the
indentures describes Alexander's property in Knox County, Tennessee and states
that Alexander was killed by Indians. Moses Cavett is also mentioned in one of
the copies. I'll be more than happy to share this information with the list.
Again, thanks for taking over the Cavett/Cavitt/Cavit list.

Hi Cavitt Listers,
When I learned that the Cavitt list was on the Rootsweb
adoption list, I decided to "take the plunge" : i.e. adopt
the list and see if WE return this list to the interest and
activity of several years ago. Restoring the productivity
of this list will require YOUR help and YOUR suggestions.
First, we need to rebuild the list membership, so be
sure to invite your aunts, uncles, parents, children,
brothers, sisters, and cousins to join, or rejoin, the
list.
My Cavitt ancestors have always been among the
most interesting of all, and I'm sure that many or
you are descendants of the same Cavitt line, so
let's make them proud with our Rootsdigging.
