[p.128] Dr. R. C. Cavitt. One of the most familiar and welcomed faces
in the home of the sick
and afflicted of Greene County, is that of Dr. Cavitt, who administers
to the physical wants of his
fellowman, in a highly satisfactory and successful manner, as his many
patients, now living, can
testify. The Doctor was born in Henry County, Tenn., but was reared in
Obion County, of the
same State, where he lived with his father on a farm. At a very early
age he commenced learning
the blacksmith trade which he completed, and, although he has not
worked at his trade for over
nineteen years, still thinks that his hand has not lost its cunning,
and that he can do as good a piece
of work in that line as he ever could. At the age of twenty-seven he
commenced the study of
medicine with his brother, B. H. Cavitt, then of Obion County, Tenn.,
and graduated at the
expiration of two and a half-years' study at the Vanderbilt University,
Nashville, Tenn. He then
moved to Greene County, Ark., locating near Tilmanville, two miles west
of Marmaduke (then
not in existence), and here the Doctor, after twelve years of labor,
has built up an enviable
practice. After coming to this State he was married to Miss N. E.
Jones, a native of Clay County,
Ark., and the daughter of John Jones, who came from Tennessee about
1830. To this marital
relation were born two children: Vera Ethel and Iler Myrtle. Dr. Cavitt
has about 120 acres of
land in cultivation where he lives, and which he has had improved to
such an extent that it is one of
the finest farms in the county. The Doctor says he intends it to be the
best in the county within a
year or two at the most. He has always, since living here, been dealing
in cotton, and by care, and
by closely watching the market, has managed to benefit himself very
much in that line. He is a
member of the I. O. O. F. lodge at Tilmanville, is also a member of the
Masonic fraternity, and in
each has filled many of the chairs, holding one position at the present
time. He and Mrs. Cavitt are
members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, near Tilmanville.

'Tennessee, The Volunteer State, 1769-1923, Volumes 1-4 is online at the
Ancestry
site: http://www.ancestry.com/
Search for CAVITT under New Additions.
Volume I contains good background info and a relatively good description
of the Cavett
Station Massacre.
Remember that all at Cavett Station were "brutally" massacred, with one
possible (underscored) exception, a son of Alexander who was later
killed. Now for the
interesting part.
Volume 4, of 'Tennesee, the Volunteer State" claims that Jane Adams
McElwee
(who married General Thomas Brown) administered First Aid at the
massacre.
Since there is no record that any of the renegade band of Indians and
Tories were
captured, TO WHOM??????
Helen
Good Morning, Helen,
A work day/Cavitt reunion for the Cavett Cemetery in Madison County/Meridianville, Alabama would be a great idea. Rita and I have been in communication about this, and I knew of your interest through her.
I would be more than happy to do whatever is helpful to arrange such an event. I am only 45 minutes from the site, and was the one who took the pics that are on Rita's site.
The closest facilities suitable for our stay and meetings are in Huntsville... and they abound there. So, I will do some contacting soon and suggest arrangements to y'all.
See you later,
Ron

Thanks for your kind words. If you have been following the Mail List postings,
what do you think about the ideas for having a Cavitt reunion/cemertary
restoration in Huntsville later this year - certainly after the hot summer
months.
The idea would be to invite all known Cavitt/Cavett descendants. Rita
Pam, and I are interested, and we would need your help in determining the
best location, e.g. a hotel/motel with banquet/meeting room facilities, etc.

Greetings! This probably is my first posting to this list, but undoubtedly will not be my last. First, many thanks goes to the hard-working and creative Rita Bryant for her slavish devotion to this never-ending challenge of researching Cavitt genealogy.Second, appreciation is extended to Pam Cavitt for putting me in touch with Rita, and being so helpful in my own frustrations of trying to locate a missing relative or two.Third, Helen McDonald has been such a delight as she has joined the search for our common heritage. With a little help from my friends, I am planning to set-up a Cavitt Genealogy Page in the very near future with the hopes that it will contain a focal point for all branches of the Cavitt clan. Perhaps this will help clarify misconceptions, end rumors, begin new rumors (!), and even bring a chuckle or two as we discover our own roots. So, my final suggestion is that we get all Cavitt on this mailing list... and that we share, share, share! Thanks,Ron Cavitt in beautiful North Alabama
