CAVET MASSACRE
On September 24th, 1793, one thousand Indians were approaching Knoxville with the purpose of attacking the Fort. They were under the leadership of John Watts and "Double Head", (Indian Chief), with Pumpkin Boy; 700 were Creeks and the rest, Cherokees. They had expected to reach Knoxville before day, on the morning of the 25th, but some detonation at the river had prevented. At daylight, they had reached the head of Stinking Creek in the Grassy Valley and were in rapid march for Knoxville. The United States troops at that place, as usual, fired off a cannon at sunrise, which the Indians heard and understood to be an evidence that their attack was expected. This disconcerted their plans and led to the abandonment of their meditated assault. The Indian force was halted immediately...In sight of them was the house or Station of Alexander Cavet, in which there were only three gun-men and his family, thirteen in number. (This house stood on the plantation now owned by Mr. Walker, about eight miles west of Knoxville and about six hundred yards north of the present stage road, where its foundation can yet be seen.) Disappointed in their hopes of plunder and too cowardly to run the risk of obtaining it by attacking Knoxville, the Indians determined to wreak their vengeance upon a defenseless family and marched to and invested Cavet's house.
It was put in the best state of defense which three men could do against a thousand savage assailants. The fire from the house killed one Cherokee, one Creek and wounded three more. This held back the Indians for a time and they sent in Bob Benge, a half Creek, who spoke English, proposing that if the Station were surrendered, the lives of the besieged should be spared and that they should be exchanged for a like number of Indian prisoners.
These terms were accepted and the house surrendered. Its unfortunate inmates had scarcely left the door, when "Double Head" and his party fell upon his prisoners and put them to death, mutilating and abusing the bodies of the women and children especially, in the most barbarous and indelicate manner possible. Cavet himself was found in the garden, barbarously murdered and having Seven bullets in his mouth, put there by himself, for the greater convenience of speedily loading his rifle. John Watts interposed and saved the life of Alexander Cavet, a lad.
The house and stables were plundered and burnt, and the Indians went off, carrying with them into captivity the only survivor of a large family. He was afterwards killed in the Indian towns.

Around The Corner: By Henson Towne
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine
If, we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tommorow" I say "I will call on Jim"
"Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tommorow comes and tommorow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner!- yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir, Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
Remember to always say what you mean.
Don't be afraid to express yourself. Reach out and tell someone what
they mean to you. Beause when you decide that it is the right time, it
might be too late. Seize the day. Never have regrets.
And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they
have helped make you the person that you are today. Tell this to
your friends. It could make a difference. The difference between doing
all that you can or having regrets which may stay with you forever.
Just my thoughts for the evening....hope that all is well with all of
you...wishing you a wonderful evening.
Rita
Good afternoon all...sorry that I have been busy and not posting much...

Marian,
We may not get too much traffic on this surname, but we just made a
match. I'm excited, the other surnames that I'm on have lots of traffic
but I never made a connection and this one I just joined.. So I guess
it pays to keep trying.
Your Elizabeth Ann Cavitt was a niece of my GGGrandmother Ann Cavitt,
born December 21, 1821, Rush County, Indiana. The information I have is
that Elizabeth was the daughter of William Cavitt and Judicia Misor,
married September 01, 1831. William Cavitt was the son of James Forster
Cavitt and Rebecca unknown.
Write to me and we can share information.

Hi Sharon
I don't believe the traffic on the Cavitt list is ever very heavy, anyway, I
seldom get one.
I am researching an Elizabeth Ann Cavitt b. Rush Co., In. 9 Jan 1842. Father
is William Cavitt and mother is Disie unknown. William and Elizabeth ended
up in Van Buren Co., Iowa. I don't know where Disie died.
I would love to correspond and share information with anyone else who may be
researching the same.
Thanks in advance
Marian Cox

Hello to all!!
Just thought that I would let you know that Sumner Co., TN has a lot of
Cavitt's listed. I do have a lot of court records from this county.
And I will get them posted just as soon as I can halfway figure out what
the old handwriting really says!! It is something to try and read!
Good luck!
Rita
I am researching the family of John Kivett and Mary Welborn they were
married 24 Feb 1823 in Randolph County, NC. The only child I have listed
is my gg-grandmother Sophia Kivett born 22 Nov 1823 in Randolph County, NC;
died 19 Sep 1913 in Taylorsville, Alexander County, NC and married abt 1847
David Moose.
Is this John Kivett and John Matthew Kivett, Jr. one in the same person?
Anyone researching this family or have information that might help me with
this research?

Hi,
I thought you'd like to know about what Rootsweb is doing and what all is
being discussed on the Listowner's List. (I know, it's a little redundant
that the listowner's also have their own list.)
The following is from Brian Leverich from Rootsweb and the spam is also
attached.

As many of you are aware, GENFORUM.COM spammed all the RootsWeb lists
tonight.
It killed our mail server, and judging by the e-mail we've received
it irritated a lot of folks.
Here's what we've done at RootsWeb:
We captured and killed as much of the spam as we could, and I'm
trying to bring the mail server back on line.
I've written to Cliff Shaw to tell him we'll be sending him a bill
for damages after we clean up the wreckage, and we expect him to pay
promptly.
I've also written to all the upstream providers of his Internet
connection, asking them to share a personal growth opportunity with
him.
What a sleaze. *sigh* -B

Hi guys,
As you've heard, Rootsweb lists have been hit again by a spammer. By the
way, a spammer is someone who sends unsolicited usually off topic mail to a
mailing list or directly your personal mail box. Last week, this list was
hit by the same printer company who shutdown Maiser. My opinion at that
time was to wait and see. Well, it's happening again to serveral lists that
I "own". I would like to know what you guys think of our options. After
all, these are really YOUR lists!
There are two possiblities. Do nothing to the list and hope that the
spamming doesn't become a real problem, or we can choose to "close" the
lists. Closing the list only means that non-subscribers will not be able to
post a message. But, the down side is that several big ISP's are bad about
chaning your mailing address and the software that runs the lists can't
catch it. This means that you may have problems posting to the list. The
main ISP who switches around a bit is ATT but several others do the same.
You may not even be aware of the problem until you try to post to the list.
So, I guess it just boils down to if you think this is a real problem or
not. We all get spam mail sent to our mailbox. Some folks are highly
offended by this practice, others find no problem with it. Personally, I've
got an unlimited account and tons of mail already coming in, so I just
delete it. I rarely even bother asking to be removed from the list because
usually this is just a ploy to verfiy the address is a working one.
I hate to make this a topic on the lists, unless you believe it is
beneficial to discuss, so, please just reply to my personal address with a
yes or no and which list you belong to. I'll tally the votes and let you
know by early next week. :)
Thanks guys!
Tracey
