I am researching a J R CAVINESS - who was the first pastor of the Plainview
Baptist Church in what is now Stephens County, OK. It was organized in
1902 and at that time was in Comanche County, O.T - before Ok was a state
and Stephens was a county. J R is listed in the minutes of the Comanche
Baptist Association as the pastor of Fair 1903. Then later he was pastor
1910 at First Baptist Church of Comanche (city), OK which is in Stephens
County, OK.
After that - nothing on him!
I have never found him on a census - but the minutes say 'he was a young
man.'
There are few Caviness families on the 1900 Census -(OK area). The 1910
Census McPherson Township, Stephens County, OK lists a Martha J CAVINESS 52
years of age born Texas as head of household. Living with her are Lemuel
20, Jessie J 19, Leafy M (a female) 16 born in OK, Martha T 15, Manly S 13,
and Sarah L 11.
Her husband, John W CAVINESS (b Feb 3, 1855 - d Juy 4, 1900), is buried in
the Dixie Cemetery with Martha CAVINESS (b May 25, 1857 and died November
12, 1925). She is listed as his wife.
This Martha is Martha J NEWMAN b Dallas Co, TX 1856 m John W CAVINESS 3 Nov
1875 in Lamar Co., Tx.. Her sister Josephine Newman b 1861 Dallas Co., OK m
7 Mar 1878 W T CAVINESS in Montague Co., TX.
There is a J L CAVINESS (22) married Lela SHARP (18) on October 8, 1910 in
Hastings, Stephens Co., OK. He would have been too young to be the Rev.
CAVINESS.
Fred T CAVINESS is shown on the 1910 Jefferson County, Oklahoma Census. He
could be a possible son of John and Martha since he was born in Texas. He
is 27 years old born in Texas. His wife, Ellen, is 23 also born Texas.
