Dia Dhuit! (Hello!)...yes, again...[:<D
I don't know how many other Lists any of you are on, but yesterday and
today a very strange and dangerous thing happened to one of the Lists at
Rootsweb. What happened affected many other Lists also (not ours, thank
goodness), but could affect the Rootsweb server itself, unless the
thread is stopped immediately.
I hope that I'm not over-alarming anyone, but here is what happened:
Yesterday, an individual posted a message to his "home" List and "carbon
copied" (Cc:) his message to no less than 50 other Lists.
Well this, in and of itself, is not so terribly bad, tho' it is STRONGLY
recommended that you Cc: only about 5 addresses at a time. Anyway, what
happened after that, and into today, as some of you may have seen, was
that everyone who replied to this individual or to their Lists was
replying to all of the recipients. All 50 of them! All of these
recipients, with the exception of the individual, were Lists. As each
person replied to the originator, or took exception with another
"replier" they were again sending these messages to a multitude of List
and individuals. Thus, the ol' snowball effect.
Not only was this aggravating to me and a good many others, it put a
strain on the Rootsweb server, which could have caused it to crash and
could have caused irreparable damage to it. Folks, we are talking in
the 10's of thousands of eMail messages that the Rootsweb server was
having to process.
I thank the Good Lord to have people on our List like you all. None of
you participated in what turned out to be "Flame Holocaust". And I
thank you very much. There was some jerk...er...uh...guy, who late this
afternoon actually posted his Surname Query and Posting to this thread,
using all of the Cc:'d addresses. Can you believe that!?
Anyway, keeping all of this in mind, please, please...only Cc: 5
recipients at a time when you are wanting to send messages to multiple
Lists or individuals.
Now, I'll step down off of my soap box and go upstairs and spend some
time with my Family (if they are still there), whom I haven't seen since
I came home last Thursday. [:<D I've been in what my youngest
daughter, Caitlin, calls the "Black Hole", or what I call my home
"Office". I asked her why she call it that and she says, "Daddy, once
you go in there, you never come out!"
Slån go foille! (Bye for now)
Oidhche mhath (Good night)
Kindest Regards,
