I have finally gotten around to writing a welcome letter for
new subscribers. Since I did not have it up when you
subscribed I am sending it to you now.
Virginia
WELCOME to the CAVIN Mailing List. This list is for anyone
related to or interested in the CAVIN family, any time or place.
* My name is Virginia Ewing and I'm the list owner/maintainer.
It is my job to make the rules and keep the list running as
smoothly as possible.
If you have a problem with your subscription or a question about
the list, write to me at:
vewing(a)ktc.com
* Keep this message in your computer as well as
a printed paper copy for reference. You will need it when you
are ready to post a message or unsubscribe.
* This list is free to all subscribers and is one of the many
list served by ROOTSWEB.
Rootsweb is operated by Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson who
give freely of their time and money.
While there is no charge for being a member of this list or any
other of
the many list run on Rootsweb, if you would like to become a
Rootsweb sponsor, make a donation, or start your own mailing
list
you will find instructions at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
For a complete list of Rootsweb mailing lists see:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist
* To post a message to the list, send to:
CAVIN-L(a)rootsweb.com
Don't forget to include the subject.
Untitled messages are often deleted without being reading.
* To subscribe or unsubscribe send a message to:
CAVIN-l-request(a)rootsweb.com
or
CAVIN-d-request(a)rootsweb.com (for digest mode)
in the subject line put subscribe or unsubscribe
or the subject line may be left blank
in the body of the message put
subscribe (and nothing else)
or
unsubscribe (and nothing else)
* Request commands are handled by a machine.
Follow instructions carefully.
*If you are going on vacation, changing your address or going
off-line, please unsubscribe first.
You must send the request to unsubscribe from the address where
you were subscribed. You can
not unsubscribe an old address from your new address.
The old address will be automatically unsubscribed after 4
messages from the list has failed to reach you. This will
happen when your mail box is full or your server is having
problems or your address is no longer valid.
That is called a bounce.
To save wear and tear on RootsWeb equipment this list
is set to unsubscribe any address that has 4 bounces. Sometimes
the notice that you have been unsubscribed will also bounce. If
you think you may have been bounced from the list send me a note
or send an ON TOPIC [not a 'testing'] posting to
CAVIN-L(a)rootsweb.com.
If you message does not make it to the list
Send a subscribe request to
CAVIN-L-request(a)rootsweb.com.
If you are bounced from the list do not take it personally. I
have been bounced from my own list.
* This list is for the discussion of Genealogy ,
primarily regarding CAVIN and related families.
*Please send ON TOPIC postings.
On topic posting would be anything having to do with the CAVIN
and related families. This could include family reunions,
newsletters, books, personal research or other material available
on the family.
It is also acceptable to send tips on genealogy and history
related to genealogy that would be of
interest to the group.
OFF TOPIC subject would include poems, greetings, jokes,
personal messages or
anything not helpful in helping us find our CAVIN connections.
* When posting your query try to give enough information to
allow others to recognize the family line.
Please do include dates and places as well as names of other
family members, if known.
"Anyone out there researching CAVINs?" just doesn't cut it.
*Do not post material that is under copyright without permission
of the person holding the copyright. You may mention the data
and where you found it, but do not copy word for word.
Public records such as wills, probates, census, cemeteries,
marriage records can not be copyrighted. The format can. Send
the names, dates, places, etc. but do so in your own words.
If you found it in a book please name the book and author but do
not copy their work.
*Do not send names or birthdates of living people. Many
companies are now using the mother's maiden name as a security
control.
Including the names of living descendants is an invasion of
their privacy.
* When replying to previous postings to the list quote enough of
the message to make it clear what you are replying to. Do not
return the entire message. Most mail readers insert ">" at the
beginning of each quoted line. Delete the parts of the original
message not necessary to your reply.
*Be aware that everything that is posted to this list goes to
the Archives on the Internet and can be accessed by the world
in general. Do not send anything you do not want on the web
forever.
*The Rootsweb Mailing list interactive search is located at the
following address.
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
You may search for previous postings to this list and others by
typing in the name of the list, as in 'CAVIN' or 'CAVIN-L' but
not 'CAVIN list' as that will generate a message the list has
not been found.
*Do not forward messages that were sent to you in private
unless you have permission of the sender. The letter belongs
to the sender, not the person receiving it.
* Do not send messages with the subject lines, 'att: John Doe'.
Letters to the list are for everyone on the list. If you have
a personal message send it to their private address.
* Do not post virus warnings.
For information on virus hoaxes see
http://www.kumite.com/myths/
*Do not post test messages, chain letters, political
announcements, current events, personal messages, ,etc.
* Please do not send attachments to the list. Some people do not
have the equipment to handle large attachments and it can crash
their hard drive.
If you have a file you would like to share, send a description of
the file to the list and those interested can
contact you by private e-mail.
* No rude comments or flames on the list!
