Dear Sharon and Donald (and other Cavin hunters!),
I have a sneaking suspicion that my Cavin family is connected to Sharon's and
Donald's. (See posting below.) Although their Cavins and mine ended up in
different TX counties, they both started toward TX from AL. (Mine went via
Mississippi.) I got my preliminary data from a family Bible, which I have
followed up with census searches. Perhaps some of the following census information
is familiar to you??
I started searching with a known family group who lived in Burnet County, TX:
Byron Hamilton Cavin. He was married twice; my husband is his great-grandson
by his second marriage. Based on census data, I am certain that William and
Harriett (unknown) Cavin are Byron's parents. Starting with earlier census
reports, I have the following information on William and Byron. (Not listed
below are other Cavins living near these Cavins who clearly were relatives as per
name repeats, etc., but right now I have not figured out what all of the
relationships were.)

A. D., age 1 yr. 11 mo., b. TX, father b. AL, mother b. TX.
Note: Bruce H. may have been H. Bruce. The H. stood for
Hobson and was the name he was called by his family. In the census lists he is
listed as Bruce H. and on his social security death index as well. On the WWI
Civilian Draft Registration he is listed as Hobson Bruce Cavin.
As a child, Hobson contracted meningitis which left him
retarded. The lack of mental acuity is noted in his draft registration. This
census shows him reading, writing, and attending school, thus leading to the
conclusion that his bout with this terrible disease happened after he was 11; the
draft registration shows it happened before he was 19. His niece reported that
after Hobson recovered from this illness, his mother never sent him back to
school.

Reply to E-mail posting on CAVIN-L by Sharon Peel
I also am descended from John Robert [or Robert J.] CAVIN who was born in AL
about 1821. I am pleased to learn of another descendant of his who is
researching his ancestry. I seem to know no more of his parents than you,
but I haven’
t given up yet.
I am descended from John Robert CAVIN and Martha Lucinia MATTHEWS through
their 4th child, James Wesley CAVIN, born in 1856 at Jackson County,
Alabama.
James would have been an older brother [8 years older] to Martha Angeline
CAVIN
[Angie]. James Wesley CAVIN married Purlina Angeline Pressley on Dec 27th,
1874
in Jackson County, AL. Two unrelated people both with Angeline as middle
names.
Like your Angie and William, their first child was born in AL in 1877,
second
child was born in 1884 [place unknown], and 3rd child [my grandfather,
George
Walker CAVIN] was born in 1886 in Eastland County, TX. It appears that the
two families: Angie and William DAVIS and James and Purlina CAVIN traveled
from
Jackson County, AL to Eastland County, TX together [along with other DAVIS
and
CAVIN families]. James and Purlina CAVIN moved from Eastland County, TX to
Cleveland County, OK soon after Oklahoma Territory was opened up for
settlement.
Farm land there remains in the possession of their descendants. Was Selma
Sylvia DAVIS born in Eastland County, TX in 1884? You implied that she was
the
second child of Angie and William.
I am interested in direct contact with Sharon Peel in relation to CAVIN
family information she may have. Perhaps if our knowledge is pooled, clues
to the
parentage of John Robert [or Robert J.] CAVIN may emerge.
