Hello Maureen
Here's what I've got on Thomas Tor at the moment - I can send you images of the
1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns if you like, but I'll need your email address, if
you don't want to do that I'll transcribe them for you and post them here, jsut
let me know. Here are the highlights:
Thomas was born in Upper Hollow Meadows, Sheffield around 1833. He was the eldest of 10
children.
He is listed with his parents for the 1851 and 1861 censuses then in 1871 he's
suddenly a widower with 2 possible children and enumerated at the house of his brother
Charles. In 1881 he has married Matilda and is living at house 2 court 2 Bramwell St,
Sheffield with no sign of the possible children from his first marriage but with 2
children with Matilda. (incidentally, the daughter you mentioned
Alice Allott Frudd born about 1873
isn't mentioned on this census, could you confirm that she is Matilda's daughter
please? then I'll add her into my records.
In the 1891 census the surname has changed to Cavell and they have 6 of their children
living with them.
Interesting points:
1. can't find him in the 1901 census (yet!)
2. In the 1881 census and in later records that may be his children and grandchildren
(still to check this out) the name has acquired a hyphen to become Tor-Cavell
I hope this is of interest to you.
In a bizarre coincidence, I've just received an email from a Judith enquiring about
Matilda Frudd! I've directed her to the Frudd board and given her your name so you
might get an email from her.
Best wishes
Amanda Cavell
