Marcus, Hi. I read with interest your descendants of Charles Caves. Since Pat Weeks and
I have been researching this line for approximately 13 years I thought I might add some
additional information for others who might be researching the same line.
We actually believe Charles started out as a Cave - minus the "s". We base this
on the fact that on his marriage license and the 1840 Harrison County, Ohio census he is
listed as Charles Cave. He is also listed as Cave on a deed in Hopedale, Ohio. He
started as Caves on the 1850 Harrison County census. We would be interested in where you
found his death date. Since he is on the 1860 Harrison County census in the Infirmary,
and there is the possibility his wife remarried in 1865, we base our death date between
1860 and 1865. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Infirmary Cemetery so there are
no dates available there.
His sons were Joseph, William H., James and John Caves, not Pittis. Pittis was
Robert's middle name.
Robert Pittis Caves wife's name was spelled Bothia, not Bethia. Since it rhymes with
Mariah, which was her sister's name, it is easily understood how the spelling evolved
into Bethia. On the Civil War Pension Index on
Ancestry.com it is spelled correctly as
Bothia.
Some other minor changes would be in counties: Charles William Caves died in Lincoln,
Lancaster Co., Nebraska, not Hanover County; John Wesley Caves was born in Harrison
County, Ohio, not Nebraska, and died in Lancaster Co., Nebraska, not Hanover; Minnie M.
Caves was 91 when she died in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1971 - thus we put her date of birth
around 1880.
We would be most interested in knowing if you have any clues as to where in England
Charles was from. He just seems to have appeared in Ohio from thin air. Thanks much.
