Hello
I am nearly certain, that I am a descendant of John Cave born abt 1810 in
Virginia and Sarah Wilson Brown. I'm just not sure which of their
descendants my ole Merrit Cave connects up to. Have searched and searched,
with many leads, but as I work on the family tree, I am finding a lot of
information that you might also be interested in.
There is nothing more important to me than learning about my Cave(s)
ancestry,
so I can sit with my mother, now 82, and tell her some family stories. To
this end,
and in my full time effort, I will once again be traveling south this year.
I'm on permanent disability, with plently of time on my hands, and I am more
than glad to share what ever I find.
There are many many disattached family members in Kentucky, Tennessee,
Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois, like myself, who would greatly be interested
in their family heritage. The problem is most of them don't have the time,
being to busy earning a living. So it is up to those of us here, online, that
can help, and we should do all we can.
Join with me, in bringing to light as much family information as we can,
together, as a family. Dust off that ole family book, look in those papers
you put up for your kids, and help us, your family, find our long lost
missing connections.
You will be greatly remembered for doing so.

Hello
As list manager for the Caves list, I would like to ask you to post what
branch of the family you are researching to the list.
I am not the list manager for the Cave list, however, I am hoping that
the list manager won't mind me asking for a roll call for the Cave list as
well, in the hopes many of us who are attempting to find family, might find
something.

Hello
Bartlet Cave married Amelia Satterfield on 2/14/1871 in Tennessee and then
died in Lone Jack Missouri; Bartlett Cave married Lucinda Rowland 1855 Lone
Jack Missouri.
One of Bartlet Cave's children is Jesse M. Cave, which, I am very greatly
interested in. As many of you are well aware, many of the Cave(s) have went
by middle names.
My grandfather, is a Merrit Cave born abt 1852, who married Jenny Swisher.
Now, even this Jesse M. Cave may not be my grandfather, there are several
Merrit/Merot/Merit Cave(s) in Missouri of the period. So my question is,
has anyone found further information on this Jesse M. Cave, or of the family
he is from? It may very well help me very greatly.

Hello
Nancy Hunter + John S. Cave born circa 1810 d near Lone Jack, Jackson Co.,
MO about 5 Sept 1863.. is of great interest to me.
There are family stories that a Cave(s) family individual married into
kinship with Jesse James the outlaw. Now, I have not found such a
connection, but I have yet to look at Jesse James half brother's Archie
Samuels family who died in the 1875 attack by the pinkerton's.
I have several of the children of John S. Cave that I am researching at
this time and would enjoy communicating with anyone related to them.
Note: See email below about further information on Jesse James.

Hello
I am interested in anyone finding, or that has found information on the
Caves who married into the Martin Family, especially a Martin Cave's
descendant line dating into Illinois in mid to late 1800's.
I know I am posting a lot lately, but am hoping that somebody who has not
posted family information yet, will do so. It honestly helps everyone thru
your sharing.
The Cave(s) Family has been especially closed mouth about their history,
in my opinion, compared to other family email lists. But we are unraveling
the mystery and I have built a huge database here of Cave and Caves family
individuals thanks to some sharing family. Like I did with the
Rogers/Rodgers Family, I have been accumulating data from every location
possible on the Cave(s) families, even if I don't yet know of any
relationship to my own family. As I worked on the Rogers/Rodgers Family
Database, and added over 8,000 different surnames, I also worked on a simular
database for the Cave(s) family. Check out what I have done for hte
Rogers/Rodgers Family at http://www.expage.com/ancestorial
Why am I working so hard on the Cave(s), because my mother, now 82, wants
to know as much about her ancestors, as my father has learned about his. Alls
she knows at this time is the names of her grandparents, nothing more, after
years of research.
Help me, help her learn about her Caves ancestors by making a posting to
the Cave(s) lists today with your genealogy data, what ever it is. If it
won't help me, it will help one of the other researchers on the list.

Thomas,
I cannot identify Charles F. Ashworth for certain, but I suspect that he
was a son of Lewis R. & Mary (Fergus) Ashworth. He does not appear in
the Lewis R. Ashworth household in 1850, according to the printed census
by the St. Louis Genealogical Society.
CHARLES MERSER ASHWORTH m MARTHA ANN CAVE/CAVI, 23 Nov 1856, St. Clair Co.,
(Added notes by Thomas W. Rogers, "Charles Merser Ashworth may in fact be
Charles F. Ashworth, with the F standing for Fergus after his mother's maiden
name".
MO, according to the Henry Co., MO webpage. Maybe he was living with and
working for the Cave family in 1850?
LOUIS ASHWORTH was on the 1840 Rives Co., MO Census, Monegaw Twp.
(Rives Co. was renamed Henry Co. in 1841.) "Monegaw Township included all
of what is now St. Clair Co. west of the line between Ranges 25 & 26."
There were also three Fergus families there, including Samuel who was 60-70
years old, so Louis/Lewis probably migrated from VA to MO with Mary's
family.

Lewis Richard Ashworth was a plantation and slave owner and later a teacher
and preacher. It is said that he was shot by the Kansas Red Legs because he
would not tell where his sons were, while living in Osceola, Mo. At the
time of his death, ca. 1865, his family was close together, but after the
Civil War and between 1866-1870, the children in this family seemed to
scatter and lived with other families. Also, it seems possible that the
first nine or more children (13 in all) had three given names. While
living in Virginia this family was using one particular given name and
continued to use it up to 1865 or 1870. After this it seems the entire
family started using a different given name. This is showing up in
documents, census records and just recently (1988) descendants of Lewis
Richard Ashworth. The story about Lewis and the Kansas Red Legs, has not
been proven as of yet, but it is still being worked on. This family has
been extremely hard to research, as they do not want to stay in one place.
What may be of interest to you, Lewis and family left Va. between 1838 &
1840 going to Rives Co., Mo.(which became Henry Co., Mo. 10/15/1841) and
later his location fell within the boundaries of St. Clair Co., Mo. Lewis
and family were in Monegan Township, Rives Co., in 1840. He is also noted,
without moving, as being one of the early settlers in Cedar Co., Mo. which
was formed from Dade Co & St. Clair Co., in 1845.
Charles married Martha Ann Cave and they had at least one child-Sarah
C. Josephine and Merit and Martha Ann Cave - seems to me to be
brothers/sisters. The above Records are from the actual Census Records on
Microfilm and read by me. I will get back to you after I look into a few
other things about this family.
Sincerely,

so, can you please provide such to me to help in my search?
Hello
As you have seen, from my many postings, I have a lot of information on
the Cave and Caves family, dating back into the De Cave Families.
But the one thing that eludes me is the information I most greatly desire
and that is about my great grandparents. My mom, now 82, and in failing
health, desperately would like to know about her ancestry. I have been able
to tell my dad of his, dating back well into the early 1600's.
http://www.expage.com/ancestorial But I have not been able to tell my mom
much at all. I know very very little about my grandfather's siblings, and
nothing about my great grandparents.
So when you are scouring over note files, online or off, and may have
something that just could be a helpful piece of information to me, please,
please, take the time to post the information or to send it my way.
My mom's brother Ernest Eugene, or best known as just George, (go
figure), has done some 40 years of research on the Caves family history, but
won't share even so much as two words to his sister, my mom. Why, because he
says I am not a "Caves" and his sister is now a Rogers. But these are my
grandparents and greatgrandparents... so what can be so secrete as to hide
this information from us. I mean my mom grew up poor, as did my grandfather,
so it is highly unlikely any great wealth would pass down our way.
Well, anyway, as time goes by, I will continue posting every single piece
of Cave and Caves family information I find to these lists. If you contact
me, I'll be glad to look up a name and dates for you, sending what ever I
have. And I sincerely do hope you send anything that might help me.

Hello
I am hoping for a bit of patience, as I post this very difficult line to
the connected surnames.
Searching for information on James B. Cave who married Ellen Caroline
Martin on 11/22/1866 in Barnwell South Carolina. I believe, I am a descendant
from this union, but am missing some of the family tree. This James B. Cave
has a brother named Whitfield Cave born 1839 Barnwell, South Carolina.
The name Martin was passed down in the family, with my grandfather's name
of Martie W. Caves and my mom's brother is named James Martin Caves. I am now
wondering if the "W" in my grandfather's middle name is in fact "Whitfield".
Anyone .... with any help, please contact me.
Thomas
Hello
I have been unsuccessfully researching my great grandfather Merrit Cave
and his wife Jennie. Merrit Cave is found in Butler and St. Clair County,
Missouri Census records. Merrit Cave changed his name to Merrit Caves in
later years, thus naming his children Caves.
My grandfather, their son, Martie W. Caves stated many different dates of
birth, including April 18, 1890 Pine Bluff Arkansas. Martie W. Caves married
Beulah Simmons of Greenbush, Warren County, Illinois, where he raised his
family. Martie would vanish for months on end, down in the hills of Missouri
and Southern Illinois. On one such occassion, he had came back, stating he
received $27.00 from an inheritance. However, upon arriving back in town, he
stopped at the local tavern/store, in Greenbush Illinois, where the locals
all hung out. Just shortly after he arrived, a group of men came in and held
up the establishment. Martie W. Cave escaped out the back and ran to the
other store across the street, only to find it was being held up at the same
time. Needless to say, they got my grandfather Martie's money, and from what
I can tell, the most money he ever had. His family home in Greenbush Illinois
burnt to the ground later, so all family records and photo's are gone.
Just a very short distance south of Greenbush Illinois, and directly
south of my grandfather Martie W. Caves home, it was found that a gun that
once belonged to Jessie James was found. Many stories had floated around
Greenbush Illinois about Jessie James gang having been thru their area
several times.
To this day, Martie W. Caves is a mystery to family. He lived for a while
in Burlington Iowa, and worked for the amunitions plant there. My
grandfather, Martie W. Caves died in 1954, the year I was born, so I did not
know him at all. However, even though he would have had to have a social
security number, none has been found. His birthdate, of April 18, 1890 is
believed fictious, and matches another Cave individual who died in Kansas
with a social security number.
It seems that Merrit Cave and Jennie had a son Charles A. Cave born in
Illinois, that is listed as being 2 years of age in 1880 Census of St. Clair
County, Missouri.
Whether or not, there is any connection to Jessie James, I don't know. But
I do know that it is terribly difficult to trace these back hills, private
country folks.
Now, I know there was a Jessie James Cave of that area, but I don't know
much about him. Also, The Cave family has many connections to the Hatfields,
McCoys,
Whitfields, and others of that area.
So I am hoping that possibly, somebody who has done extensive research on
Jessie James, might have also looked at these Cave connections.
Below is some of what I have found:
LDS Records:
I found several Merrit Caves marriages online (LDS), so it was not an unusual
name:
Merit H. Cave m Catherine Rush 21 Jun 1835, Monroe, MO
Merrit H. Cave m Mary Ann Earles 14 May 1861, St. Clair, MO
Merrott Cave m Fannie Geary 23 Jun 1872, Pettis, MO
Merit Cave m Mary M. Duncan 18 Mar 1874, Hickory, MO

Residing in Butler County, Missouri in 1880

1860 Census, for Missouri Examined:
Josephine Cave, age 13
Merit Cave, age 8, born in Missouri
Residing in St. Clair County, Missouri in 1860
Speedwell Twp.
Page 974 -104 line 17
Enumerated with Charles F. Ashworth, age 22, born in Virginia
(Notes: This may have been from Merit's father dying when he was young,
resulting in Merit and his sister Josephine residing with Charles F. Ashworth)
Charles F. Ashworth married Martha Ann Cave, thus Josephine and Merritt are
most likely siblings of Martha Ann Cave.)
Note: There was a child named Charles F. Ashworth, born in June of 1864, who
died on May 31, 1909, that may have been the child of the above Charles F.
Ashworth, but such requires further research efforts.
The following, as found in the 1900 Census, is a very likely source to find
the connection we are seeking:
James Caves Vol. 21, Sheet 6, E.D. 13, Line 82
(White) Born May 1829 - Age 71 Born in Tennessee
Christian, in Linden Twp
Members of the Family in the Household:

Amanda Caves, Daughter, Born October 1873 - Age 26 Born in Missouri
James E. Caves, Grandson, Born May 1875 -Age 24 Born in Missouri
Martie W. Caves is said to have a brother known as Bert Caves, who resided
in Havanna Illinois, that was a profound river boat gambler. This Bert Caves
had two daughters who went to California who got into the silent motion
pictures. However, nothing has been found on him or his daughters, even
though, family says he resided in Havanna Illinois all his life.

Hello
I don't know about the rest of you, but the Cave(s) research really has
this ole boy frustrated. My mom's brother Ernest Caves of Galesburg has
researched his family for 40 years, but won't tell my his sister, my mom, a
single thing, even when she offered to pay him for the information. My mom,
now 82, probably won't live to find out about her ancestry, other than
knowing the names of the grandparents. Nothing about siblings of her father,
nothing about siblings of her grandparents and nothing about great
grandparents.
But one thing that has prevented me from finding out anything is what
appears to be a literal attempt by ancestors to conceal who they were. Even
my own mom's brother Ernest, is not known as Ernest Eugene Cave, but as
George. He states he lives just as his father did and his grandfather before
him. What the heck does that mean?
My grandfather, Martie W. Caves, is said to have given out many different
birth dates during this lifetime. My mom believes that he was born April 19,
1890 in Pine Bluff Arkansas. He wrote on his marriage license in 1915 that
he was born there, but listed himself as being 23 at the time. Unfortunately
he died the year I was born, in 1954, so I never got to know him. They say he
was a heck of a praticle joker, so me and him would have gotten along very
well indeed.
Martie Caves told my mom that his dad had died when he was a child, and
that he was raised by a mean grandfather ( not known which side of family)
and later, he went to live with a Preacher, who sold moonshine during the
week. Where? On his marriage license he listed himself as being the son of
Merrit Cave and Jenny Swisher.
I did find a Merrit Cave and wife Jenny in Butler County and St. Clair County
Missouri. They had son Charles A. Cave born, Illinois in 1878, age 2 in 1880
Census of Missouri. Mom said that her father said he had a brother Bert Cave
who resided in Havanna Illinois, but, in a recent trip to the Mason County
court house there, no Bert Caves....born, marriage or died. There were a few
Cave individuals however, none, that I can find any connection to. Then there
was a mention of a sister or half sister Panzie... where she went in Iowa and
who she married, is anyone's guess. I'll bet ya a nickle, Panzie was probably
not even her legal name, because I've never found her.
Now, I found a Bert Caves who died in Nevada... but, don't know where, so
don't know how to obtain a death certificate.
Sometimes I wonder if Martie W. Caves is actually his name and that even
though he is deceased, he is still out here playing jokes on me. I mean, I've
been able to trace my Rogers family back into the 1600's, with loads of
family stories, so why can't I do the same for my mom?
Now, my mom's brother's wife, did a name drop, which her husband thru a
fit about at the time. She said that he was a descendant of Brian De Cave,
and mentioned a John Brown Cave. But like that helps me in the 1800's. There
were Cave(s) in Knox County, Illinois, and a James Caves that nobody knows
who he belongs to. But somewhere down in Southern Illinois, Northern
Missouri, or over around Burlington Iowa, where my grandfather lived just
before he died, somebody should know something. Somewhere in Iowa, there is
a sister or half sister who married and lived over there, but I have no idea
as to a last name or where.
So, now, after reading this, are you as frustrated as I am? If so, I'd
enjoy hearing your struggle, and what you have found or not found that causes
your frustrations. Maybe between us, we can figure out the Caves Code.

Hello
Looking for researchers of Cave(s) families of Iowa for help. Have you
spotted any unidentified Cave(s)? Possibly around Burlington? Looking for a
sister of Martie W. Caves, who's parents are listed as Merrit H. Cave and
Jenny Swisher. Martie listed his birth place as being Pine Bluff Arkansas.
