I am trying to find out something about Fanny Yates, mother of Edward Cavendish Yates, my
maternal great grandfather.
I have E.C.Yates's birth certificate: Born 1845; mother - Fanny Yates; no father; born
at 6 Sherborne Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex.
Residents at this address in 1941 census are all of the surname Bundey (including one
called Fanny but I don't think this is his mother). The 1951 census is unreadable for
this address.
I can find no record of an Edward Cavendish Yates again until his marriage in 1873 to
Priscilla Jane Mecham. I only have the record not the marriage certificate.
His eldest son is of exactly the same name but born in 1874.
There are a few Fanny Yates' (his mother's name) around at this time and I have
various 'theories', but none that I can back up with hard evidence.
The family story goes that as a child Edward, whose later lifestyle was that of a
gentleman, would watch his mother in a carriage on the way to the Epsom Derby from the
Epsom College School gates. I can find no record that fits his dates at this school.
I would love any clues that anyone may have.
