Like many of you, I have been doing research on the Cavendish family. Some posts I have
seen indicate that a Margaret Cavendish who came to America on the ship Litchfield in 1752
could be the mother of William Henderson Cavendish. I obtained the records on her from the
Old Bailey Treasury in London and thought I would share the information. She was a
spinster who was convicted of grand larceny in London on 19 Feb 1752 and was sentenced to
transportation to America for 7 years. Per Peter Wilson Coldham's book "The
King's Passengers to Maryland and Virginia", the Litchfield passengers were
delivered to Maryland. Since she was a spinster, I am doubtful that she had children that
were sent with her.
I find it amazing that there are no personal, other than court records, regarding a man
who was so prominent in Greenbrier County. I'm still looking, though.
