Cavendish researchers, Consider the following information:
From: Greenbrier Co., WV Court Orders 1780-1850 by Helen S. Stinson 1988 p.
150
Court April 29, 1794
"On motion of Wm H Cavendish who made oath , and with James McCoy his
security, entered into a bond in the penalty of 150 pounds to obtain letters
of administration of William Cavendish, deceased. Ordered that John
Williams, James McCoy Jr. and James Jourdain Sr. to appraise in current
money the slaves, if any, and personal estate of William Cavendish deceased
and return the same to the court."
Court April 29, 1794
" John Williams is appointed captain of the militia in the room of Wm
McCoy who declined his appointment. James McCoy Jr. appointed lieutenant in
the above company of militia. James Jourdain Jr. appointed Ensign in the
room of William Cavendish, deceased in the same company of militia."
William Cavendish md. Jane McCoy Feb 6, 1794
Jane Cavendish md. Joseph McClung May 1, 1804
Jane Cavendish md. Joel Walker Aug 23, 1797
Can't it be considered that the Jane Cavendish who md. Joel Walker is widow
of William Cavendish who died by Apr. 1794. What is the evidence that a
William Cavendish moved to Kanawha C? If there is evidence then there had
to be three Williams since William Hunter died in Bath County in 1818(Bath
C. records-will written on Aug 8, 1818; probate Nov. court 1818) and a
William died in Greenbrier C. in 1794(above reference). And how could there
be two Jane Cavendishes marrying in this time period unless one was a widow?
Also: William H Cavendish md. Alice McClintic Bath C. VA on May 10, 1804.
(She was widow of William McClintic-maiden name was Alice Mann. I have
sources for this) None of the supposed children of William H. would be
children with his marriage to Alice Mann-except possibly a Nancy whom he
mentions specifically in his will. Wm.'s will is filed in Bath C. VA and
from an abstract from Wills and Inventories of Bath County, Va 1791-1842 he
names only his wife Alice and daug. Nancy by name. "All other children" are
to divide everything else equally. Alice does not mention a Nancy in
her will. However, a Nancy Cavendish md. Wm Hannah on Dec. 27, 1827 so she
could be a d/o William and Ann. Any one with information on her?
.
William Hunter Cavendish married Jane Murphy on June 13, 1780.(From Wm and
Mary Quarterly, Vol 8, Series 2 . The information is from a copy of Marriage
register of John Alderson Jr. in possession of VA Baptist Historical Society
at the University of Richmond(VA).)
Mary Cavendish, assumed to be d/o William Hunter, was age 45+ in the 1820
Greenbrier census and in 1830 her age was 50-60. Greenbrier census.
Therefore she was born between 1760-1770 and could not be d/o William
Hunter and Jane Murphy.
William Cavendish md. Jane McCoy on Feb. 6, 1794. He would not be a s/o
William Hunter and Jane since he would have been only 13-14 at time of
marriage.
Margaret Cavendish md. James Knight on Nov 25, 1802. The death records of
Greenbrier C.lists her parents as William and Jane Cavendish. She died on
July 3, 1853 at age 69 according to transcribed death records. In 1850 she
is listed as age 60, age 50-60 in 1840 and 40-50 in 1830 so I suspect her
age at death was incorrectly read or her son gave an incorrect age when he
reported the death. At any rate, she was born after 1780 -when William was
md. to Jane.
William appear to have married at least three times(or was there another
William early on ?) I have seen names for a third(and 4th wife) but what
are the sources for this?
Would appreciate any input!
