Karen, I do not remember if i answered your request or not , if i did ignore
this. I am descended from Alex mcClung and Rebecca Cavendish through their
son William McClung and Elizabeth McClung. In regard to William Hunter
Cavendish he is listed as Hunter on his marriage to Jane Murphy, also listed
as Hunter on a will that he witnessed about 1780. also as hunter on a deed
transaction while living in Bath Co. I have only seen henderson listed in
the book written in 1961 and do not know where he got his information.

Subject: [[CAVENDISH]] Introduction
Hello list,
My name is Karen Kessler Cottrill. I am the family historian for the
Kessler/Kesler family of WV. I was born and raised in Nicholas Co. WV. I
have
been doing genealogy research on my family for almost 20 years. I
have
been
organizing and collecting information on allied family lines for
about 15
years. I recently retired and am in the process of moving from NJ to SC.
All
my referance books and papers are in SC, however I wanted to join in
the
thread about William H. Cavendish. I have six William Cavendish's listed
in
my database with dates of birth ranging from 1740 to 1861.
I have always kept William b. ca 1740 as William Henderson Cavendish in my
file even though there has been doubt as to Henderson OR Hunter. The
reason I
kept it this way is that I found it to be Henderson in the
"Cavendish
Family
History" papers which were reprinted in 1961 and it made it
easier for me
to
keep track of in my genealogy computer program.
This William was married three times
#1-Mary McCoy Williams. Her parents were James and Jane Unknown McCoy. She
was the widow of John Thomas Williams who died ca 1763. I do not have a
marriage date for Mary and William Cavendish but it would have to be after
1763.
#2-Jane McCoy Murphy. Her parents were also James and Jane Unknown McCoy.
She
was the widow Murphy when she married her sister's husband,
William
Cavendish
13 Jun 1780.
#3-Alice Mann McClintic. She was the daughter of William and Jane Hamilton
Mann. She was the widow of William McClintic when she married William
Cavendish 2 Aug 1808.
I have no children being born to William and his first wife Mary or his
third
wife Alice, although both women had children by their first husbands.
I
only
have 7 children being born to William and his second wife Jane. They
were
as
follows:
1-Jane Cavendish m. Joseph McClung (my GGG Grandparents. They had 7
children)
2-Mary Cavendish m. Isaac Callison ( they had 9 children)
3-William Cavendish m. Jane McCoy (same name as his Mother) (this is the
William that was an attorney and the first clerk of Kanawha Co., VA. He
practiced law in WV. They had no children)
4-Maragret Cavendish m. James Knight
5-Andrew Cavendish m. Jane McClung (They had 13 children and these are the
parents of William Hunter Cavendish 1810-1878 who married Rachel Hull in
1840. )
6-Rebecca Cavendish m. Alexander McClung (They had 6 children)
7-Sarah Cavendish m. Thomas Brown ( They had 1 child)
I have extensive McClung information and belong to the McClung roots web
list. I would be interested in hearing from Keith McClung
(emcclung(a)weir.net)
on how he decends from Rebecca Cavendish and Alexander McClung.
I am always willing to share or exchange my information but like I said
earlier, I am in the process of moving and have limited access to my
files.
Only those listed in my family file on my computer is what I am
working
with
at the moment.
Karen Kessler Cottrill
I am always open to corrections to my information

Some of this information comes from--
"Cavendish Family History" printed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1961 papers.
Laws of Virginia pg 44 chapter 41- "An act for erecting Liberty Hall

into a College".
Greenbrier Co., WV Family Heritage Book 1997 pg. 43 under William Hunter
Cavendish by Graydon Thomas Smales-Love, 25550 Boerne Stage Rd. #22, San
Antonio. TX 78255-9567 Mr. Smales-Love gives this mans name as William
Hunter
Cavendish and the Cavendish Family History gives it as William
Henderson
Cavendish. They are the refering to the same man, but this has become
confusing to researchers since William Hunter/Henderson Cavendish had a
grandson named William Hunter Cavendish
