1790 Clinton Co., NY census --Wellsburgh Township
lists an individual Charles Cavender as head of household over 16 single with no
dependants.
Closeness of Clinton Co., NY (most northern county in NY,located on west bank of Lake
Champlain ) to Ferrisberg, Vermont (east bank of Lake Champlain) suggests this Charles
married Deborah Davis. This is the only Charles Cavender listed in or near NY or Vermont
in 1790 census. Some researchers speculate that Wellsburgh Township may have been a
logging/shipbuilding camp since the majority of people listed in Wellsburgh were single
young men. Note-- Clinton County split into 2 counties in the late 1790s.
BOSTON TRANSCRIPT (issue Feb. 14, 1927) article requested help placing Davis Families of
Long Island, NY vicinity. Said Daniel & Mary Davis family moved to Ferrisberg,
Vermont about 1786, or earlier, made his first purchase of land 1786, calling himself from
Setanket, Brookhaven Township, Suffolk Co., NY; had son William born c. 1759 (per death
record), who married Mercy __?; had son Zophar born c. 1769, who married Lois Porter &
later went to Erie Co., PA; had daughter Deborah who married Charles Cavender; had
daughter Mary who married Robert Satterly; maybe had more kids. Was this Daniel Davis
taken from Long Island to Guillford & listed there in 1776 census ? In NY wills is a
will of Daniel Davis of Brookhaven, NY dated Feb. 27, 1760 which names father Benjamin;
sister Hannah; sons: William, David, Henry, Elisha, Spicer, & Joshua; executors: son
David & Capt. Samuel Davis; witnesses include a Silas Davis; will proved Sept. 13,
1763. In 1782 is will of Zophar Davis (da!
ted Mar. 16, proved Dec. 27) also of Brookhaven; names wife Sarah; sisters Phoebe, Hannah,
Sarah, Elizabeth; brother William. In early Long Island wills is will dated Oct. 5, 1689
of Joseph Davis of Brookhaven, who died Feb. 15, 1690; names wife Elizabeth; sons Joseph,
Benjamin, Samuel, Daniel; daughter Mary. Is Zophar who died 1782 brother to Daniel who
went to Vermont ? Noted that Daniel Davis died 1826 @ age 92, wife Mary Davis died 1830 @
age 93.
Note: Research data from another Daniel Davis descendant notes that Daniel Davis was born
in Wales abt. 1734 and migrated to New York abt. 1759. Daniel joined the Colonial Army to
serve in the Revolutionary War. Some other Davis families (originally from Wales) that
settled near Ferrisberg VT around that time, were known to have supported the British
during the Revolutionary War.
1800 Ferrisberg, Addison Co., VT census
lists as head of household a Charles Cavender (male over 26, less than 45), a female less
than 26, one son, & two daughters less than 10. Only Cavender in Vermont 1800 census
index.
1810 Census ..... Charles not found ...
son Robert Cavender born 1810 notes birthplace as being NY .... only Cavender
family noted in 1810 census in NY or VT is noted as being D. Cavender family in Madison
Co. NY with household ... males 10010 females 11010
1810 LDS records say Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH tax index lists a Charles Cavinder.
(Son William Cavender noted in his later years that he was the first of the family to go
west, and he came to the area that later became Cincinnati at age 18, which would have
been in 1811 or 1812. This LDS record is probably an error, and should only refer to 1817
tax list.}
1817 Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH Tax list
notes a Charles Cavinder household with
males: 1 over 21, 1 between 12-21, 2 under 12
females: 1 over 21, 1 between 12-21, 1 under 12
1816-1824 marriage records of children begin to appear to Jeffersonville Township, Clark
Co., Ind.
1820 Jeffersonville Township, Clark Co., IN census

under 10, 1 under 15, 1 under 18, 1 under 25), 3 other females ( 1 under 10, 2 under
25). Son William is listed as only other Cavender Head of Household in region.
1824 marriage records of children
shows that Charles & family moved to Troy Township, Perry Co., Ind circa late
1823 or early 1824.
1830 Troy Township, Perry Co, Ind. census
lists Charles as less than 70, living with female less than 60, 1 male & 1 female
less than 20, and 1 female less than 10 ( granddaughter ???)
1840 census - Charles not found - probably elderly male shown to be living in the home of
James.
1842 Records from present-day Perry County Historian, has Charles as dying in Feb. of
1842, Place of burial for Charles and Deborah Davis Cavender is not known.
1850 census records of children note birthplaces 1793-1815 as Vermont or New York.
1870 Census records for William Cavender of Dubois Co. IN and Deborah (Cavender) Lentz
of Jefferson County KY state both parents are native born, not foreign born.
Statement of Clarence Cavender (grandson of James Cavender - ca. 1972}
Aunt Lizze & Dele (Diana Elizabeth and Adeline Emma - daugthers of James
Cavender) said that their grandfather lived with them, that he was 5'2"
tall, slender, and "very Irish" and that his name was Samuel. I have had
several people tell me his name was Charles and others said "Will". Well take
your pick, what does it matter?
Note: Family legend passed down in James Cavender family line states that several of the
older Cavender men were "riverboat" men. Closeness of the Charles Cavender
homes to the early steam-boat building/operation efforts of the Robert Fulton family &
Nicholas Roosevelt suggests that Charles may have been somehow involved in either the
construction or operation of some of the earliest steamboats. More research is needed
here.
