Robert,
The foremost authority on Cavenders in the USA is J. T. Cavender, Esq. of
Ohio. If he did not respond to your inquiry, please direct an email direct
to him at <JAYCAV@worldnet. att. net>
I have my Cavender line traced back to a James Wesley Cavender b. circa 1650,
who was the grandfather of Henry Cavender who was born on 12 Oct. 1699 in
Newcastle (on Tyne), Northumberland, England. It is my understanding there
were a lot of Cavenders in that area close to the Scotish border.
The earliest Cavender we have been able to find out was a Dority Cavender
born 1615, daughter of a Francis Cavender who must have been around in the
late 1500's.
We here in the USA think our surname was anglicized from something like
Kavanaugh dating back to when England invaded Ireland and that there was not
much evidence of the surname spelled Cavender before that era.
When I was in London in 1983, I only found 5 Cavenders listed in the
telephone directory, whom I rang up. Only one of them was interested in
Cavender genealogy whom had some intertesting points to bring up which I will
not go into at the present.
I did find some other Cavenders around the lake country that I did not ring
up. At that time I was only latently interested in Cavender genealogy.
I am so glad you have become interested in your family history, especialy
from the UK, where we need much input as to our ancestors who immigrated to
America.
I am sure J.T.and the rest of us Cavenders on this side on this side of the
"pond"
will help you all we can. But, at the same time, if you should find out
anything about your 3rd great-grandfather, James, who married Mary White,
please let us know. And if you can go back before them, so much the better.
What we all need, on this side of the pond, is a Cavender in the UK who is
willing to investigate his heritage, and report back to us so we may better
understand where we really came from. Are you willing to help us cousins
this side?
Some kind of a bloody cousin,
-Bev Cavender
