William C Stewart's "Gone to Georgia: Jackson and Gwinnett Counties and the
Western Migration," p 224:
"364. Joseph Cavender 200010-52010-0
'The Cavender family is found in Westmoreland County, Va, in the 1770s and in
Princess Anne, Charlotte, and Washington Counties in the 1780s. In 1790, James Cavender
10300 was living in Spartanburg District, S.C. and in 1800, James was enumerated
30010-00110 in Pendleton District, along with Ezekiel 02001-0011 and Clement 00100-20100,
living near Elijah Cornwell, who married c1783 Catherine Cavender (Born c1764 in Virginia)
probably in Virginia or North Carolina. Cornwell moved from Pendleton to Jackson County
in 1801 or 1802 and subsequently to Jasper County, Ga. While not found in Jasper in 1820,
the Cavenders were there earlier: Barbara Cavender married there March 12, 1818, Madrick
Merritt, a family previously in Pendleton; and James Cavender married Feb 19, 1819,
Susannah Kates. In 1820, Clement was enumerated in Hall County, George (2) in Walton
County; and William in Emanuel County. In 1827, Martha, a widow, was living in DeKalb
County, and Elizabeth was in J!
asper County. (See pension papers of Joseph, Va, S35818; William, N.C, Margaret, W6903;
John Del., Md, N.C., Margaret, W9776)."
Also, regarding James Cavender: In "Marriages of Rowan County, North Caroliina
1753-1868, compiled by Brent H Holcomb. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1981, p 72
lists
Cavender, James & Mary Smith, 8 July 1794; Elijah Cornwell, bondsman; J Troy,
D.C., wit.
Mary Ann Harding
(my Cavender line descends from Clemeth Cavender, who married Rebecca Deadman/Dedman.
Clemeth Cavender is believed to be son of Ezekiel Cavender, who evidentally came from
England to Maryland, then settled in Westmoreland Co VA about 1770. His children are
Catherine, who married Elijah Cornwell; Clemeth, who married Rebeca Deadman/Dedman; James,
who married Mary Smith and later moved to Marshall Co TN; George, who lived in Jasper Co
GA near Catherine and Elijah Cornwell; and Joseph, who was in Gwinnett County GA in 1804,
by 1830 in Gayette Co, GA and in 1840 in Maury Co TN where he died about 1858. I am
looking for land deeds, marriage records, wills, etc, especially for Ezekiel Cavender.
Has anyone located county courthouses where any documents are located today? Thank you.
