Subject: Cave & Berry Family
Hello,
I was referred to your family page by someone else. I have been researching my family
history for 30+ years. I have a problem documenting my Cave line. I will tell you what I
have documented and from what source and you can tell me if it fits in with your line
anywhere. My main problem is I know I descend from John Cave and his wife Elizabeth of
Page County, Virginia. However, in the 1850 census for Page County there are two John
Cave's with wives named Elizabeth. One family has Aleshires living with them, they
are not mine. The other family is mine, but the census taker listed John and
Elizabeth's daughter, Nancy, and her children as Cave's rather than Berry's
which they were. The children were Ellen (my gg grandmother), Mary, James, Elizabeth and
Susan. However, Nancy's husband, Wesley Berry, was not listed. In the 1860 census
for Page County, again I find Elizabeth Cave with daughter Nancy living with her. This
time the surname is correctly listed as Berry and !
the additional children are Adaline, Newman and John W., again no Wesley Berry. John Cave
isn't listed either so I assume perhaps he died. Wesley Berry and Nancy Cave had an
additional daughter Edna Frances who married Francis Marion Cave. I have a copy of Wesley
Berry and Nancy Cave's marriage record which lists her parents as John Cave and wife
Elizabeth. I have copies of the marriage records of Edna Francis, Ellen, Mary and James
M. all listing the parents as Wesley Berry and Nancy Cave. I have death records for James
M., Ellen and John W. all in Ohio that shows the names of the parents were James Wesley
and Susan Nancy, something I hadn't know until then. In trying to find James
Wesley's parents, I had a hard time until another researcher told me it might be
Margaret Berry of Page County. Her will dated 1856 indeed proved the tie I needed. It
named one of her legatees as her granddaughter Edna Cave, wife of Francis Cave. However,
the will did not mention James W!
esley, his wife or any of the other children.
Does this tie into anything you have?
