CAVE, William W.
William W. Cave, son of Thomas J. and Mary Kirkland Cave, was born
in Dubois County, Indiana January 255, 1873 and departed this life in
the Orange County Hospital December 14, 1963 at the age of 90 years.
When he was a young boy his parents moved to Orange County where
he went to school. Later he attended a term of school in Paoli. going
from there to Indiana University. He returned home and taught school a
few years.
In early life he held a position in the H.E. Wells general store in French
Lick and became associated with Mr. Wells in the operation of the Wells
Hotel. In 1907 Mr. Cave, with A.C. Smith and R.V. Claxton formed the
F.L. Mercantile Company and conducted a very successful business. They
were the builders of the Star and Crescent stores. At one time Mr. Cave
was part owner of the Twin City Lumber Company.
He was president of the French Lick State Bank for 50 years, retiring only
a few years ago. Although he gave up active business life, his interest in
the bank never waned and he spent several hours there every day
greeting friends and keeping in touch with bank activities. He was a
member and regular attendant Of the French Lick Methodist Church and
for many years served as one of its trustees. In recent years he was an
honorary member of the Official Board. For many years he taught the
men's Bible class in the Sunday School. He was A member of the
Indiana Bankers Association, the French Lick Masonic Lodge, and
Kiwanis Club. In 1899 he was married to Cora Wells who preceded
him in death in 1929. Sometime later he was married to Lorraine King
who passed away about a year ago, December 21, 1962 He is
survived by one sister, Mrs. Isis Hill and several nieces and nephews .
