Hello! I am twice descended from "Old" Benjamin Cave Sr of Spotsylvania-Orange
Counties in Old Virginia. I have studied the Cave Family for several decades. I have yet
to identify Old Benjamin's parenterage and place of birth. There has been an
assumption that his family goes back to the Caves of The East Riding, York, England where
the first Caves were known to be Normans who emigrated to England in the 11th Century. The
Norman immigrants supposedly took the surname de Cave from the two villages North Cave and
South Cave in the The East Riding. Whether they had Norman surnames is unknown. I am
interested in your statement that your line goes back to the East Riding. Most of the
Caves in this country go back to Old Benjamin and others in pre-Revolutionary Old Virginia
and who were probably siblings or cousins and may have been related to John Cave of even
earlier origin who had a warehouse on the Potomac in the 17th nCentury (1600s).
Cave-Browne-Cave is a relatively recent n!
ame consruction and said/recorded to be from the Cave Family of York's East Riding.
There are Cave-Browne-Cave descendants in Western Canada. There is an idea that the
Virginia Cave Family was from a Valentine Cave of England, but no known male direct
descendant of Old Benjamin has yet agreed to have a DNA test to prove that line (or any
other line). My line from Old Benjamin was male all the way to my greatgrandfather, but I
cannot qualify as a direct Y chromosome descendant of Old Benjamin because of the female
interruption of my grandmother. Anybody have new information? Greetings to all. Edwin G.

could be from an English emigrant to France, Spain or Italy. That route of travel was
common by land and by sea.
