Hello DODD/CAVE researchers,
I was going through the old CAVE/DODD files tonight and thought to send you
an update.
1. I still have not found any proof that my gg grandmother was lucy CAVE
dodd. No marriage, death or anything of documentation. However, there is
the census listings on three census for LUCY A.DODD or LUCY DODD and Louisa
DODD.
2. On the 1850 census A.DODD(ashley haywood dodd) age 35 male and a planter.
wife: Louise (this woman could be called "lucy" but no mention of CAVE
family)age given at 34. Children listed as: Elizabeth, age 13,(synthia
elizabeth dodd Gravenor (milam co.),James M. age 10, Marilla DODD age 8,
Lewis taylor (L.T.) Dodd, age 6, and Amelia Dodd age 1.
The family just next-is shown living in the same household, James DODD age 20
and wife SARAH age 19(legend says she also was a CAVE) ; and children, Larra
D. female age 4, and Fordonia, female age 2.
In the household above Ashley Haywood DODD is the family, the mother, we
believe to be his father and his brothers and sister. :Jonathan DOD(DODD) age
66, wife, Lusinda age 48, and sons, William (32),Henry(27) and IsaacM(9).
and daughter Caroline E. DODD (11) It could be noted here that ashleys
mother could be called "lucy" also.
NOTE: WE have not found, what happened to: CAROLINE E. DODD< HENRY DODD<
ISAAC M. DODD<LARRA D.DODD>FORDONIA DODD>MARILLA DODD, JAMES M. DODD AND
AMELIA DODD
3.In 1859 A.H.DODD (ashley) sold 80 acres of land in St. Stephens, ALA for
cash and the clan went to texas.
4. In 1860 ashley is dead in texas, San Augustine, CO. Of pleurisy and by
the time the census is taken Lucy shows up as head of household. Simply
LucyA. DODD.(It is the first time we have found her name as lucy A. DODD.
There is also a LOUCINDA DODD -in Milam co. census 1860 and also a William
DODD in Milam co. census 1860. Now there is also a LUCINDA DODD AGE 60 who
is living in choctaw co. alabama in 1860 as head of household-alone. I think
this is the mother, the father having died before the 1860 census was taken)
BSOG.(best soap opera guess)
(the TEXAS DODD,Loucendia could be a daughter of ashleys or niece(possibly a
second name for Marilla, Amelia, or Fordonia ? BSOG-best soap opera guess)
5. By the 1880 census Lewis Taylor and Lucy DODD are both listed as living in
the same house in Bandera county. That is were Lewis's wife, victoria asenath
collins was born. AND there is a William DODD in the next farm down.
Also in the Milam co census for 1880 is the following DODD people: Charles A.
DODD, residence 105, Virgil DODD residence 105 and Mary DODD residence 103.
NOTE: we need to know who is CHARLES A.DODD, VIRGIL DODD AND MARY DODD???
6. The James Riley DODD who married Sarah ( had a daughter named, MRS.
Hairston-and she gave testimony at the hearing of her step-mother, Mahala
DODD for widows pension for service to the confederacy for James Riley DODD
and was approved) and he (james riley DODD) later in old age married Mahala
Bankston DODD was Ashleys brother. I also think the William DODD who lived by
lucy DODD was also Ashleys brother. (his picture (will DODD) was found in the
Mahala DODD family photos-owned by L . Schroeder.) (.Note: I am just guessing
on some of this. JUDY)
7. There was a Nancy CAVE and a SARAH CAVE who petitioned for a doctor to
have to stay in the community-he was enlisted for the Glorieta campaign.
(records of Williams diary in Milam co. from lynette schroeder). Now, it does
not call her SARAH CAVE DODD? And, in another web site, it shows ashley
haywood dodd married to a nancy cave! (more questions here--and gets even
more confusing--trying to tie everyones info together)
8.L. Shuffield gives this information:
John CAVE b. 1827 married Francis "fannie" Elizabeth McDonald and their
daughter, Lucy CAVE married, Ashley Haywood DODD and their child was Madison
DODD.(this could be the James M. age 10 in the 1850 choctaw co. ala census)
NOTE: In 1850 census above--ashley was 35 in 1850--born at:1815 before Lucys
father was born! That would mean that if James M. was Madison and Lucy was
Lousia then she had the little boy before she was prob. born! OH, this is
getting too much for me.
we know that ashley gives his age as 35 in 1850. WE do not know Lucy CAVE's
birth--just that Louisa (34)was one year younger than ashley in 1850. Did
ASHLEY have two wives? Both could be called LUCY? groan. So. could the Louisa
DODD of the 1850 census be the LUCY A.DODD of the 1860 census?
Okay, gonna stop it here. There are bits and pieces that I could put in--but
it would not change anything above. WE are at a stop place unless we
find some documentation for this LUCY and some of the above people. I am
asking you -all to go over your files and look to see if we have overlooked
something that could answer some of the above mysteries.
I am wanting to go on and work some on the CAVES and POUNDS COLLINS lines,
but until We prove that we are a CAVE......?
THE BELOW LISTINGS ARE FROM LDS SOURCES:
The LDS has a reference for the parents of synthia elizabeth dodd gravenor as
ashley haywood dodd and louisa A. REED DODD.(please notice that it is given
as "A"--as in Lucy A. DODD.....
Another LDS record(AFN: 19BZ-CNP) shows: JONATHAN DODD,SC. as married to
Lucinda MARTIN (AFN: 19BZ-CPW) born 1796 in Clark co. ala. and her buried in
McDowell cemetery, Bladon Springs, Choctaw county ala. and children as:
MARTHA DODD (AFN; 19BZ-CQ4) born 1810,SC(five years before ashley) and
CLARAUDA DODD(AFN:19BZ-CRB) born 1812, SC.(three years before ashely) .
Second spouse for Lucinda Martin DODD was: William McDOWELL,(17 march 1817)
for a marriage date---this really messes up things for ashley.born 1815.
This is LDS record (AFN:19BZ-CPW) and if the researcher can count--the births
of the daughters above were before the McDOWELL marriage and after the DODD?
Then: Did she then remarry--DODD to be listed on the 1830- 40-and 50 census?
Okay, said I was gonna quit. chew on this for awhile and let me know what you
think--or if you find anything else--
If anyone has any CD's look for a marriage of ashley and lucy? Try search
engines or any other researchers that you know or mailing lists. I have
registered everyplace that I know. IT seems to me that somehow--if we go over
this enough--and keep putting the pieces tog. somehow it will eventually make
sense. Are you old enough to remember a "Rubicks Cube?" Took forever--and
frustrated you to death and then one day-wham and the puzzle was solved!
Goodnight--have a good holiday and surf when you can. always, sherlock
grimes. (grin-JUDY)
