"According to George H.S. King in a report to Mrs. D. B. Thompson 18 April
1967, the deposition which establishes the birth year of Benjamin the Burgess is
filed in the suit papers:(1)
Crosthwait vs Crosthwait, Orange Co, Virginia; Judgment File #17, Papers
of June Court 1759. According to the report the deposition read in part as
follows: "Benjamin Cave Gent. Sworn and Examined in the suit Depending in the
County Court of Orange between Abraham Crosthwait Plaintiff and William
Crosthwait Defendant, in the presence and by Consent of the parties Deposeth and
Saith, That he is about 55 years or thereabouts...That about the time of Timothy
Crosthwait purchasing the land in question from Hezekiah Rhodes..."

estate of Thomas Garrison with Benjamin Cave and William Bledsoe.
*The publication, Spotsylvania Co, Records 1721-1800 by Crozier, lists
him as witnessing deeds there on 3 June 1728, 1 Jul 1729, 4 Apr 1732, and 2 May
1732.

*Benjamin represented Orange in the House of Burgesses in 1756.
*Among the members of the first vestry of St. Mark's in 1731 was Benjamin
Cave (St. Mark's Parish, Culpepper Co, Virginia). Benjamin was vestryman
of St. Mark's until 1740, when St. Thomas Parish was cut off from St. Mark's
and he and David Cave, who was Lay Reader at the old Orange Church near
Ruckersville, became members of the new parish (St. Thomas) in Orange Co, where they
lived. The records of St. Thomas being lost, their relation to it cannot be
traced.
"It is known, however, that the family adhered to the Church of their
fathers; and one of the old ministers, about 1740, live with Benjamin Cave,
Sr., whose residence was within reach of the first chapel (near Brooking's) and
the old Orange Church.
Rev. Slaughter has original poems in Manuscript, written by a sister of
Benjamin Cave, Sr, endorsed 1767.
The first Benjamin Cave lived for a time at what is now known as Rhodes
in Orange, and then moved to land on the Upper Rapidan near Cave's Ford which
derives its name from him."

In a biography of William Cave, the author John Taylor (Benjamin's
grandson-in-law) refers to Benjamin as Captain Benjamin, and says that he was frequently
