Gillingham Church, like much of Dorset, faced a number of problems in the
late 18th century. The majority of people were not wealthy and had only a
fairly basic education. Roads, bridges and housing were often in a dangerous
condition. There was no doctor in Gillingham. Naturally, the people were
unhappy, and riots were not uncommon. Local vicars were often out of touch
with the congregation of their parish. John CAVE, a Gillingham glove maker
at that time, said this about his vicar...
"What a famous scholar our minister is. His learning is so great that we do
not understand the half of what he says"
