Since clearly John Cave married Elizabeth Travers, I have the feeling that Mary Cave may
have been from an earlier marriage which we don't have a record of. John was a little
old to be marrying for the first time.
Although you can make the dates fit for Elizabeth to have been Mary's mother,
Elizabeth Travers Cave was married again after John died, to Capt. Lewis Ellzey. She had 3
children by him, and although I don't have the dates for the birth of the 2 daughters,
the son, William Ellzey, was born in 1727. To have been Mary Cave's mother, she would
have had to have been around 55 when William was born. Possible, but not likely.
Another kink is that some sources (They Called Stafford Home) have that the William Cave
who married Anne Travers, another daughter of Giles Travers, was "in all
likelihood" the son of John Cave. If that's true then certainly Elizabeth
wasn't his mother. It's possible he was John's brother instead. But, if as
some researchers have, John's parents were Samuel Cave & Rachel Kellogg, there is
not William listed as a child of theirs.
I think I saw a posting proposing someone as the first wife of John, and the mother of his
children. This seems a likely scenario.
It does seem like we should be able to figure it out, but I've checked most of the
sources for Stafford and for King & Queen and haven't been able to. So I just
ignore it for a while and then go back to it, hoping that someone will have it all figured
out in the meantime :-)
