William CAVE's Lives of the Father Vol. I, II, III
Books: Religious, Historical
This is a set of 3 remarkable books published in 1840 called
Lives of Most Eminent Fathers of the Church that flourished in
First Four Centuries with an Historical account of the state of
Paganism under the first Christian Emperors by William Cave
and revised by Henry Cary, M.A.. They are bound in an amazing
soft leather which has a gild circle on the cover which reads
"Quebec Classical School Instituted 1836". Inside the covers
there is a beautiful 2 page design which is also on the pages.
They were published by Oxford and printed by J. Vincent, for
Thomas Tegg, 73, Cheapside, London. William Cave
( 1637-1713) was a divine of great learning and a native of
Pickwell, Leicestershire. These books describe the government
of the Ancient Church of Bishops,and Patriarchs especially the
Bishop of Rome. (Item #267-103)

Sproatley -St. Swithin Church
Another ancient tombstone, in good condition, is preserved
in the floor of the chancel. It is of black marble, with a Latin
inscription to George CAVE, Esq., of Sproatley, who died in
1696. On the west wall is a brass to the English family of Hull,
who presented the font to the church. In the churchyard are the
base and part of the shaft of the old village cross, removed
hither about 40 years ago.

History of Salston House
Sir Edward Charles CAVE, Bart J P of Sidbury Manor married
Betty Christine Coleridge. In the early 1950's Lady Betty Cave left
the Salston House (photo) after the death of the the Dowager
Lady Coleridge. The property was then broken up and sold off.
The House was sold off along with the ride, Gardeners Cottage ,
Stables and Walled Garden.
