MUSEUM TARGETS VETERANS' GUNS
A pair of World War II relics still capable of packing a deadly
punch are museum- bound. Two fully-automatic Schmeisser
submachine guns will be handed over to the Canadian War
Museum later this week by Ottawa OPP after three years in
storage at OPP headquarters.
"A veteran brought them back from the Second World War and
had hidden them away," OPP Sr. Const. Eric Booth said
yesterday about the powerful MP-40 machine pistols the late
Hayden CAVE brought home more than 50 years ago.
Cave died in 1967 and the weapons were passed on to another
family member who put them away for safekeeping. Other family
members then turned the guns in to OPP in 1997 during a gun
amnesty program after they were found in a Fitzroy Harbour cottage.

HISTORY OF THE HAZEN FAMILY
''...In 185 I was visiting in Mina. I asked Elice Cave about grand-
father's illness, I wished to know more about it. She said, he had
lost his mind and was not hard to care for. It was softening of the
brain; something many have at seventy years of age. He died
with Uncle Silas in the spring of 1835. Father had moved to
Pennsylvania. He came back in the spring after cows and sheep,
and we all came with him. Grandfather died while we were there.
Sarah and Elias, Uncle Paul's children came home with us. Elias
went back, but Sarah stayed until the next spring. Daniel, Sarah
Hunt and Elcie came to make us a visit. Elice stayed with us for
a year. Elice stayed until James Cave came and she returned
with him. they were married soon after. They had a large family,
but only three are now living. Elice died in Mina in 1886. William
married Miss Elarda Fox of Mina, she died in 1873. They had
three daughters; Jenny married F. M. Tryon, and Carrie married
Fred Douglas.
Note: "Maude the baby at the time of her mother's death went to live
with Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Peabody of Ripley and took the name
of Peabody. She married Frank Wolfe." William Cave, for a
second wife, married Miss Mary Stanton of Chautauqua. They had
three daughters, Bertha and Ruth now living. Bertha married
Dell Skellie, and Mable married Harvey plumb and died soon after.
Note: "Ruth Cave died." William and Franklin Cave were in the Civil
War. Franklin died from a wound received at Gettysburg. The
daughters of James Cave were Mariet, married George Lake and
Sarah married Adonijah Tagart........

CHEROKEE COUNTY, IOWA
BIOGRAPHIES - 1914
Pages 197-198
ROBERT W. CAVE
Robert W. CAVE, who owns three-quarters of a section of
land in Amherst township, has been connected with agricultural
interests of Cherokee county since 1885, winning in the interval
a success which places him among the substantial and
representative farmers of this community. He was born in Jackson
county, Iowa, July 4, 1862, and is a son of Robert and Eliza (Bryant)
Cave, natives of Somersetshire, England. The father came to
America when he was very young and located in Ohio, where he
remained for some time. He afterward moved to Jackson county,
this state, and there engaged in farming until his death, which
occurred in 1873. His wife survived him many years, dying in May1895.
Robert W. Cave was reared and educated in Jackson county, Iowa,
and remained there until he was twenty-two years of age. In 1885, in
company with Joseph Hobbs, he came to Cherokee county and he
here purchased one hundred and sixty acres on section 18, Amherst
township, bending his energies to its improvement and development.
>From time to time he added to his holdings until he now owns three-
quarters of a section, which he operates according to the most
modern and practical methods. He also owns a quarter section of
land in South Dakota. In addition to general farming, Mr. Cave is also
a well known dealer in horses, being a partner of D. S. Twogood, of
Marcus, in this line of activity. He is a stockholder in the Farmers
Elevator Company, of Marcus, and a man of recognized business
discrimination and ability. On the 20th of January, 1885, Mr. Cave
married Miss Rose Hanham, a daughter of John and Mary (Green)
Hanham, natives of Somersetshire, England. The father was a
carpenter and wagon maker in that country and in 1880 he came to
America, locating in Jackson county, Iowa, where he worked at his
trade until 1888. In that year he moved to Marcus, this county, and
has followed carpentering and wagon making there since that time.
He has reached the age of seventy-six and his wife is eighty years
of age. Mr. and Mrs. Cave became the parents of five children:
Ernest, who died February 22, 1904; Stanley, aged twenty-six;
Gladys, twenty-four; Ralph, twenty-one; and Merle, fifteen.
Mr. Cave gives his political allegiance to the republican party
and
has held positions of trust and responsibility, serving as trustee of
the township for seven years and as road supervisor and school
director. He attends the Methodist Episcopal church. His life has
been one of well directed energy and intelligent activity, resulting
in the attainment of a fair measure of success, and wherever he is
known is respected by reason of his genuine personal worth.

Page 318......
On the 29th of March, 1881, Mr. Hobbs was united in marriage to
Miss Mary P. CAVE, a daughter of Robert and Eliza (Bryant) Cave,
natives of England.

I am attempting to prove details concerning Lydia E. Fritcher, b. abt 1866 in Illinois, daughter of William Henry Fritcher and Margaret Ann Springer. We know Lydia married a Mr. Cave. Is she the Liddie Edith who married to Arthur Dellno Cave?
Arthur D. Cave with wife Liddie E. is enumerated in the 1900 Spring Valley twp, Dallas Co, Iowa census. Also there are children Ora and Nathan Cave.
If I am tracing the right family they are found in these Iowa locations:
Dallas Co. – Lydia there with her parents in 1880 census, and then perhaps with husband in 1900.
Clinton Co. – Lydia Cave lived at Toronto, at sometime
Cedar Co. – there is a Liddie, Arthur, and Ora Cave buried in Massillon Cemetery. The tombstone reading shows that Liddie Cave died in 1913.
Does anyone know where Lydia/Liddie Fritcher married (Arthur?) Cave? You may email me directly at RizerK(a)erinet.com

Annette, have you contacted CavesCove.com? Your Arch Cave would be Archibald Cave, son of Uriel Cave who was a son of Mallory Cave who was a son of another Uriel Cave.

ASHABEL WILLARD CAVE
Springs Valley Herald (July 7, 1927)
ASHABEL WILARD CAVE Obituary
Ashabel Willard Cave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Cave, was
born near Crystal, Dubois County, Indiana march 4, 1857 and
departed this earthly life July 1, 1927.
He was married to Miss Louisa R. Cox, December 21, 1879.
One child blessed this union, Miss Emma Cave, now Mrs. Sol
Simmons.
Mr. Cave leaves two brothers, Lee of Bedford, Indiana, Will
of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Mrs. Molly Meyers of
Evansville.
Mr. and Mrs. Cave united with the Baptist church in Crystal and
later Mr. Cave transferred to the Methodist Church where they
spent an active and useful christian life, in the service of humanity
and God.
As the great heart of the master was touched by human need,
so likewise, the tender and sympathetic heart of Mr. Cave was
responsive toward the needy, having taken into his home and
care William Painter, a thirteen month old baby, who sits today
in the shadows beside the bier of a modern samaritan.
Testimony to a Friend: "You have done all for me that can be done,
I am ready to go, I am just waiting for the Lord to take me home.
There is nothing between me and Heaven, Don't keep me waiting,
I have nothing against any one, nothing to dread. I don't want you
to grieve after me. I think you ought to be shouting."
In the passing of Mr. Cave, the community looses one of its
oldest and best citizens, Mrs. Simmons, a kind and loving father,
Mrs. Cave a faithful companion, a host of neighbors and friends
join in heartfelt sympathy.
