About d.caves
I worked 15 as a surgery assistant at a veterinary clinic in Indiana.
Even though it was a small animal clinic, I also love horses. My
favorite horse was a Tennesse Walker, Bootwalker, who was
trained to cut cattle. Together he and I worked as a team to bring
in the Polled Hereford cattle on the farm. (In his mind he believed
he was a quarter horse.)
Currently I own two Tennessee Walking Horses, Smokin Pistol and
a filly named Fancy.
Besides my work in a veterinary clinic, I have worked as data base
manager for a large corporation. Not as exciting as the veterinary
work, but much better paying.
I have three children, ages twenty-nine, twenty-seven and eighteen.
My grandson is two.

CAVE Century Farm
It became a Century Farm in 1985, and has been under the
CAVE name all these years.
Robert W. CAVE came to Marcus from Jackson County, IA
with his wife, Rosa (Hanham), and his mother, Eliza, on
March 1, 1885. He purchased the farm from David COULTER
and wife, Lizzie COULTER, on March 7, 1885. He purchased
160 acres for a price of $5,440. It is the southeast quarter of
Section No. 18 in Amherst Township. His mother, Eliza CAVE,
died in May 1895.
Robert and Rosa CAVE were the parents of five children. They
were: Ernest, Stanley, Gladys, Ralph, and Merle. Rose died in
January of 1915. Robert and his son, Merle, farmed together
until Robert retired; then Merle took over the farming. Robert
remained on the farm until his death in December of 1940.
Merle CAVE continued with the farming, and married Deliah COOK
of Madison, SD; they had seven children born to them. They are:
Dorothy GABEL, of Marcus; Lucille BISHOP, of Council Bluffs;
James and wife, Lorraine, of Marcus; Glenn and wife, Delores,
of Cherokee; Mary Dee CARLSON, deceased; Gracie and
husband, Burdette HOLTGREWE, of Le Mars; and Kenneth
deceased.
James began farming in 1947, and purchased the home place
in 1965. Merle remained on the farm until he passed away in
March of 1976, and Deliah passed away in January of 1991.
James married Lorraine BAY of Granville, IA in September of
1951. They are the parents of eight children; Joyce COUGHLIN,
of Sioux City; Shirley CAVE, of Richfield, MN; Gene CAVE,
of Remsen; Betty WEIHE, of Vacaville, CA; Don CAVE, of Marcus;
Charles CAVE, of Avoca; Dale CAVE, of Marcus; and Bev KAMPA,
of St. Paul, MN.
Gene and Don CAVE are farming the land now. There have been
four generations of Cave's living on the farm.
It is owned by James and Lorraine CAVE, who are still living on the
farm.
Hello
Have had an exciting moment here that I thought I'd share with you.
As you know I am searching for my mom's grandparent's grave. I've finally,
after three years of searching, found my grandfather's sister Hettie Rosetta
Caves descendants. Now, her grandson, now 66, is asking around in the family
for information about the location of Merritt Henry and Jennie Caves burial
site. But, he "thinks" his aunt has actual photo's of Jennie and Merritt....
My mom, now 83, has never even seen or met her own grandparents while they
were living or at a gravesite, so if a photo does exist, and or they know
where the grave is, she would be thrilled beyond words. So my fingers and
toes are crossed.
I know I have loads of work to do yet finding other siblings and
children of my great grandfather Merritt Henry Cave, but by golly, I'm
getting closer.

Any Cave relative that wants to read the details of the Southern
thinking about the Civil War should read this book. Robert Catlett
Cave was a very literate person and presents the case very well. EGT

The Men in Gray
by ROBERT CATLETT CAVE
"The Men in Gray" and oration delivered at the unveiling of the
monument to the private soldiers and sailors of the South in
RIchmond, Va., which created quite a sensation at the time it was
delivered, and was discussed for weeks by the press throughout
the country. One of the Virginia papers said: "It is a speech from
which nothing can be taken and to which nothing can be added
without injury. . . . It is a concise but clear statement of the
causes
that led up to the war and an accurate pen picture of the private
solidier such as we know him to have been."
-----
Cave, a Confederate veteran, has delivered a masterful defense
of the South and a well-documented case for Cavalier Loyalty
versus Puritan Disloyalty. Like A Southern View, The Men in Gray
is required reading for anyone seeking the truth about the War
Between the States.
"Their Spirits were victorious, their bodies only fainted and failed."
