HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
BARROW UPON SOAR, ENGLAND
"Perhaps the most renowned of the memorials in Barrow
Church is the famous Cave Memorial in the chancel, with
its quaint irreverent puns indicating a spirit of levity which
assorts strangely with the sacred atomosphere of a church,
Here in this Grave there lyes a Cave,
We call a Cave a Grave.
If Cave be Grave and Grave be Cave,
Then render judge I crave.
Whether doth Cave here lye in Grave
Or Grave here lye in Cave?
If Grave in Cave here buried lye
Then Grave where is thy victorie?
Goe reader and report here lyes a Cave
Who conquers death and buries his own Grave.
"Close by is the Cave Tablet.
"Theophilus Cave, the most eminent member of this family
was an ardent churchgoer. Uncle to Humphrey Babington,
Babington remembered the deep interest his Uncle had
always shown in the Spiritual side of village life.
"In his will, he made provision for the presentation of Bibles
and prayer books to poor children who could read. These
Bibles became known as the Cave Bibles and were annually
presented by the Vicar of the Parish. "

Does anyone claim this stray Cave. Found in the 1891 census for Bridgwater Somerset. George Cave, living at 68 Wellington Road, wife Eliza,( born in Bridgwater) place of birth Limerick, Ireland.
Milner Echol's family tree can be found at:
www.armory.com/~vern/family/newletter/echols.htm
There are mistakes in it though it seems pretty accurate. The fact that he
was mentioning his great grandmother as Mary Cave is not proof but probably
pretty good eveidence. It seems to be at least supported a bit by the 1703
land grant in King and Queen County.
It does seem that "English John" Echols may not have been the immigrant
ancestor though, I think there was another, earlier, John Echols who was his
father. There was an Edward Echols in Prince George / Sussex counties clearly
related to this family as well, perhaps English John's brother and (the
immigrant?) John's son.
As far as Cave, I see references where Mary Cave Echols was estimated to be
born ca 1670-1674. Would this be a possible daughter of John Cave who
married first an Andrews and second Elizabeth Travers and d. 1720?

I am of the opinion (tentative) that this John Cave (d. 1720) was first married to a daughter of George Andrews and then second to much younger Elizabeth Travers. There was another John Cave (say John Jr.) in the area who inherited lots in Marlboroughtown from his grandfather George Andrews and later sold them to John Mercer. This grandfather relationship and sale to John Mercer are recorded. There is another land transaction recorded where 200 acres of land owned by John Jr said to be inherited from his father John Cave reverted to David Cave of Orange. I think this John Jr. and David of Orange were oldest and second oldest sons of John Cave (d.1720) and first wife (--?--) Andrews.

Is the John Cave you refer to as married to Elizabeth Travers the one in the following land transaction in Stafford Co VA? If not the same, what relation if any? There is a chance worth pursuing, that I am descended from the one of this record.
Jim Cave
Stafford Co. Deed Book Z, p384 Darrell release to Cave recorded 8 Oct 1707.
John Cave of King and Queen Co., a carpenter of King and Queen County, buys from Sampson Darrell, of Glocester Co., 300 acres of land in Stafford Co. lying and being on the south side of Potomack Creek and bounded as follows: Northerly in Potomack Creek, Easterly with the lands of John Gorvey, Thomas Gregg, Wm. Waught, Southerly and westerly with the lands of Giles Travers; the said 300 acres of land being the one half of 600 acres sold by Capt. Wm Heaberd to Capt. John Norgrove by deed dated the 6th day of March 1667.
Hello! I can't find the book: Milner Hubbard's "book" (which isn't
that long) is also posted on this message board. Can you give me a
specific reference? This Cave-Travers-Echols-Bledsoe thread is
getting interesting because I'm from Cave and Bledsoe and I think the
common ground is all in Old Virginia 1600s. Will of Giles Travers,
Stafford County, VA, 1717, mentions son-in-law John Cave and
researcher blakley3(a)earthlink.net 8 Mar 2000 adds that John Cave
married his daughter Elizabeth and William Cave married his daughter
Ann. Elizabeth later married Lewis Elzey and Ann later married Thomas
Dent. Helpful?? Can someone give me the details of the Bledsoe
connection to Travers/Echols? Ed Troutman

the will to suggest Mary Travers Cave was of a later generation, if
anyone could back that up and "settle" it ((since so many people have
her as the Mary born ca 1650-1660 mother of Mary (Cave) Echols born ca
1670-1680)), that would be great.

I too am descended from John Echols and Mary (Cave?). I think its probably true that Mary was a Cave except that other than Milner Echols's account there is no proof. However the two families were aligned, as they say, and I know from other genealogical research that proof could quite possibly be found through other documents. However I think, though I could be wrong, that the John Cave who married Elizabeth Travers was probably a brother, rather than father, to Mary Cave Echols. Interestingly it was said Mary Cave had shocking red hair, and I have some red hair to this day...who knows?

I am twice descended from this Benjamin Cave. I want to caution all
Cave connections that there is, yet, absolutely NO creditable evidence
that this Benjamin Cave Sr. was born in England and/or the descendant
of William Cave and Ann Stonehouse. My personal opinion is that he
was born in Virginia and related to John and Mary Cave of the
Travers-Echols connection and the other Caves of early Virginia
(David, Robert, William, etc) of adjacent areas.

Dear Charles,
I am looking for PROOF of the Travers connection.
My ancestor was Aaron Bledsoe. His father was Abraham
Bledsoe who married Sarah Cave. Her father was William Cave who married Ann Stonehouse. His father was
John Cave who married 1st, Katherine Ball. Then he
married Elizabeth Travers. I THINK this is correct.
I need the PROOF.

Item 1:
The Seneca Cemetery Association was organized according
to the statute in May 1863, Samuel Lappin being elected President;
THOMAS CAVE, Vice- President; J. H. Peckham, Secretary,
and B. Scofield, Treasurer. A necessary amount of land was
purchased, about one mile northwest of the city, surveyed and
platted and a few years later a substantial board fence put up,
at a cost of about $150. The land is admirably situated, its physical
advantages being all that could be asked; and while private
improvements have been made, and a number of tasteful
monuments erected, but little as yet has been done by the city or
association beyond the enclosure of the site.
Item 2:
On November 16, 1869, a preliminary meeting, with the purpose
of organizing a literary society, was held in the schoolhouse, and
a week later the question debated whether or not Seneca should
be incorporated - the affirmative being taken by Abijah Wells,
J. H. Cotton and H. P. Dryden; the negative by G. W. Collins,
JOHN CAVE and Prof. Gauss. An election of officers was also held,
resulting as follows: President, Thomas Moore; Vice-President,
S. L. Hamilton; Secretary, J. H. Cotton; Treasurer, Alice Church;
Sergeant-at-arms, H. P. Dryden. Considerable interest seems to
have been manifested for some weeks, when the society ceased to
exist.
