Hello. I am interested in making contact and exchanging information with
researchers, or descendents of the Cavenah family originating from Charles
Cavenah or Edgecomb County, North Carolina who died in 1757. (I spell the
name ending with "ah" because that has persisted among many of the families
that came from this line). Some indications are that this Charles's father's
name was also Charles but at this point I am not sure. There was also an
Arthur Cavenah who resided his last years in Brunswick Cty, Virginia near the
N.C. state line whose will was probated there before 1720 and seems to have
ties to the above Charles Cavenah. If anyone has seen a copy or abstract of
this will I would be most interested in knowing what was in it.
Charles Cavenah of Edgecomb Cty, N.C. had the following sons: Aquilla, David,
Nicolas, Arthur, Charles, Needham, Henry and one daughter, Mary. Several of
these sons settled in Burke County, Georgia and some of their descendents
migrated northward to Christian County, Kentucky. My ancestor, Aquilla,
settled in nearby Orange Cty, the part which became Chatham Cty. After his
death, Aquilla's widow, Joyce Wooten remarried a Frances Drake and moved to
Union County, South Carolina. Aquilla's son Nicolas Aquilla(rarely used the
name Nicolas) married Henrietta Beckham in Union County. They moved to
Fayette County, Alabama in the early 1820's where he died. Their children
scattered throughout Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, and possibly Louisiana.
The children of Nicolas Aquilla Cavenah and Henrietta Beckham are as follows:
1. Aquilla Cavenah - born Oct 23, 1800, believed to have died young.
2. William Beckham Cavenah - born Dec 2, 1802 - married Jane Moorhead
daughter of Joseph Moorhead. Settled in Mississippi.
3. John Williams Cavenah - born April 23, 1803. Died 1837 in Fayette Cty, Ala.
4. Elizabeth Henderson Cavenah (my g-g-grandmother) born Feb 13, 1809,
married John Darough Morrow and lived in Tishomingo Cty, Miss and Prairie Cty
Arkansas.
5 and 6. Twins James Henry Cavenah and Susan Henrietta Cavenah, born May 1,
1813. James married "Catherine" and lived in Mississippi. Some of his
descendents ended up in Texas. Susan married Isham Moorehead, also a son of
Joseph Moorehead. They resided in Lowndes Cty, Miss.
7.Mary Alzira Cavenah - born Jan 3, 1817- married Robert H. Moorehead, also a
son of Joseph Moorehead. They lived in Lowndes Cty and Winston Cty, Miss.
If any of this sounds like your family, or if you can help in any way, I
would be greatful to hear from you.
