We have Bridget Cavanaugh (immigrated 1848 and widow of John) b abt 1827 Ireland, d 30 Nov
1911, and is buried at Cathedral Cem. We found a short obituary for her in the Scranton
newspaper (on microfilm at the Scranton Library). John was b abt 1821 Ireland. We did not
find a record of his death or burial, but did find where he was in a mine accident in
1872. He evidently d before the 1880 census. Bridget lived with daughter Sarah Marion
after John's death. John and Bridget had a grandson Thomas John Cavanaugh b 1878 d
1933 who is buried at Cathedral Cem. These Cavanaughs lived mostly in "The
Notch" 3rd Ward Scranton (Census). Martin, Michael, John, Patrick, and Thomas are the
most prevalent male names in the family.
One of our DNA 36 of 37 marker matches says that his Dad, Martin Kavanagh was born in
1895 in the village of Kilimor, parish of Neale, Co Mayo, died in 1970 in Kilmaine, Co
Mayo. His grandfather John Kavanagh was b 1860 Kilmaine, Co. Mayo, and he says that his
great grandfather was born 1816, d 1886, assumed buried in Ballinchalla, Neale. The
following found on rootsweb posted by John McAfee:
1796
Surname First Name Parish/Barony County
Cavanagh Thomas Ballinrobe Mayo
Cavanagh William Neal Mayo
Cavanagh Owen Kilbelfad Mayo
Cavanagh Michael Ballyovey Mayo
Cavanagh John Neal Mayo
Cavanagh James Kilmainemore Mayo
We are planning another trip to Ireland in the fall for the Clann Gathering. There are
a couple of places in Co. Mayo we'd like to go (probably all of them have a number of
John Cavanaugh/Kavanagh's is the problem). In 2006 while in Co. Wexford we found this
in the Ferns church records:
John Kavanagh, bapt. 3 July 1821; parents were Peter and Mary Kehoe Kavanagh; sponsors
were James Corton and Ellen Conry. They lived in Ballyduff. I was really excited about the
birth year being 1821, but have no proof this is our John (only have census records to
help with birth year), plus now several DNA matches are with people who say their family
came from Co. Mayo.
Let me know if any of this helps anyone.
