One good place to look for ancestors who lived in the US in the 20th century is the Social
Security Death Index. There are several good search sites (
www.familysearch.org is free)
and
Ancestry.com has lots of info including the SSDI.
A quick search of the SSDI shows the following:
Name: Richard P. Cavanaugh
SSN: 216-30-9812
Last Residence: 21223 Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland
Born: 30 Aug 1935
Died: 1 Sep 2005
State (Year) SSN issued: Maryland (Before 1951)
You can obtain a copy of the actual application form of a deceased person from the Social
Security Administration. The application form includes the person's name, date and
place of birth, and parents' names that were given when he or she applied for the
Social Security number. For more information, go to Social Security Online.
I was able to use this information to break down the brick wall of my great
grandmother's parents names.
Whiile I am researching Cavnaughs, I don't think your father is one of mine.
Good luck!
