I wonder if any can help. My Great Grandmother was Louisa Cavana and on March 24th 1879 in
the Gibraltar's Garrison Chapel she married a Sergeant in the 2nd Battallion of the
Rifle Brigade, William Smeeth from Cornwall. The wedding certificate states that
Louisa's father was Anthony Cavana.
Family stories are that Louisa was the daughter of an Italian family that had come from
Genoa. They had decided to make a new life in the USA but, on their way, were shipwrecked
off Gibraltar and apart from 2 sons (possibly went to USA) they all seemed to have settled
there. They had several children but I only know about 2 daughters, both married British
soldiers, one was Louisa b.1852 another was Ramoona b.1848 (she married Henry Hopkinson),
all this taken from military records. The family stories also suggest that Athony Cavana
may have been in the Army and died in The Crimea. Obviously it would be fantastic to get
proof of an Italian connection.
