BRUNSWICK - Margaret C. 'Maggie' Smith, 96, of Spring Street, passed away
peacefully Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2005 at Amenity Manor, Topsham.
She was born in Brunswick, June 16, 1908, the daughter of William and Minnie Griffin
Cavanaugh. Her childhood was spent on Jordan Avenue with her mother and grandparents.
Maggie attended Brunswick schools.
In 1925, she married David P. Smith. Mr. Smith died Dec. 6, 1963.
Her long work career started during the depression when she went to work at Verney Mill.
In the late 1950s, she joined the Pejepscot Paper Company and was employed there for 22
years.
After only two and a half weeks of retirement she joined L.C. Andrews in Topsham. During
her brief retirement Maggie found herself with too much time on her hands, watching
television or joining clubs which was not for her. Working and being out with people was
something she looked forward to each day. When Downeast Energy took over L.C. Andrews she
stayed on and enjoyed every hour doing the work wherever she was needed. Retirement was
not her way but in May 2004, Maggie retired at the age of 95.
She was a member of running start and would dance to the sound of music. She had more
energy than most people half her age.
Maggie loved her family and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by a son, Robert L. Smith of Brunswick; a daughter, Florence Carley of
Argyle, N.Y.; three sisters, Dorothy Coombs of Topsham, Ruth Crossman of Richmond and
Betty McNary of West Bath; a brother, Ernest Atkins, Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
Friends may visit Thursday, Mar. 3, 2005 from 6-8 p.m., at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29
Federal Street, Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the United
Baptist Church, 1 Elm St., Topsham with the Rev. Ronald McLaughlin officiating. Interment
will be in Riverside Cemetery, Brunswick, in the spring.
