Ken, by now you know it was throiugh
Ancestry.com where I got a copy of the manifest of
the passengers including those named Cavanaugh on the April 1853 journey of the
INTELLIGENCER to New York from Liverpool. But it was a relatively easy task, since from
earlier research I already knew the age of my emigrant ggrandfather Charles in 1853 (6
years old in the year of his arrival)), from which I got the name of the ship, and the
fact that he was traveling on it with a group of siblings or cousins, none of whom were
older than 16. The new information I obtained from this manifest was the first names of
his fellow Cavanaugh companions (Lawrence, age 16...Daniel, age 11...and Mary, age 4) on
the journey, and the fact that their place of origin in Ireland was County Leinster. I
also had known in the past that Charles' father's name was Bernard and that his
mother's maiden name was Mary Anne McMahon (from Charles' death certificate info).
I've never been able to find his parents
in any census in the US, and they were not on the ship...so I am presently assuming that
they remained back in Leinster, or had passed away by 1853.
