I don't know if this info is "relevant" to you...but since you asked for
Cananaghs this is what I have:
My great-grandfather was John Cavanagh,b.Dec.1852 in Scotland of an Irish father. His
mother in Ireland died and he, with 4 siblings were sent to New York, where their Aunt
Bell and her husband took them in. The Bells were very wealthy and wanted all the children
to enter convents or seminarys...they rebelled. I'm not sure of all the sibling
Cavanagh names, I know of one girl, Catherine, who married an actor, and died young in
poverty in New York. There was another sibling whose given name was Charles....he ran away
and went to sea...no one ever heard from him again....(maybe he went to Australia?) My
great-grandfather ran away with Auntie Bells' ladys' maid, Ellen Brennan, who was
born in New York but whose parents were from Ireland. They were disowned for awhile...they
married and had these children:
1-Catherine,b.Oct.1882, New York City
2-Charles, b.Aug. 1882, New York City
3-Margaret, b.Nov.1885, New York City
4-Ellen, b.March 1888, New York City
5-Anastasia,b.Aug. 1890, Wortendyke, New Jersey
6-Maddeline,b.March 1891
7-Grace,b.Nov. 1896, Wortendyke, New Jersey
My grandfather was given a late wedding gift from the Bells...a gentlemans farm in
Wortendyke, New Jersey.
He was murdered by a thief in later years.
My grandmother was Catherine Cavanaugh...John and Ellens firstborne.
I don't know if this is any help....but that's the saga of my Cavanagh family.
Peace!
Kathryn E. Norman
