My name is Gordon William (Bill) Cavanagh. I am researching my family history.
My grandfather's name was Thomas Cavanagh who emigrated from Ireland to England some
time in the latter part of the 19th century.
I do not know where in Ireland he came from. I do know his father's name was Michael
Cavanagh. Whether the family or just Thomas emigrated, I do not know.
On July 28, 1879 Thomas married Mary Schofield of St. Helen's in the Church of the
Sacred Heart, St. Helen's, Lancashire, District of Prescott. Thomas was 21 years
old, a coal miner, and Mary was 20 years old.
Thomas and Mary had eight children: James, Mary, Lillie Ann, John Thomas (my father, born
March 1, 1889) Edith, Catherine, Agnes, and Margaret.
In the 1901 census, the family was living at 3 St. James St. St. Helen's, where all
the children were born. At that time, James, the eldest, was deceased, and for some
reason the children were listed under the name "Caveney".
My father, John Thomas Cavanagh married twice, the second time to Rachel Hope on April 22,
1931 in Salford, Lancashire (at this time Thomas wad deceased).
I am the youngest of his second family of five children. Three children from his first
marriage were named, Tom, Noreen, and Don. There were other children, but I do not know
their names.
If anyone has any information about these families, I would really appreciate hearing from
you.
Thank you, G. W. (Bill) Cavanagh
